View Full Version : Red Frog
RedSilas 07-12-2003, 02:57 AM Hey everyone, I did this piece in one of my illustration classes. I used color pencil and a dab of white guash. I'm currently including it in my portfolio to show rendering and animal figure drawing ability. I could use some feed back. Thanks!:D

How the hell did you make the frog so realistic!? Aside from the background, that pic seriously looks like a photo.

Hmm.... nice frog! I do have a number of crits, though:
I think on the upper forelimb around the finger - or rather IN the finger - you might wanna define the rounded nature of it with more of that sortuv internal shading. And/Or give it more of a shadow... maybe that's the way. Right now it looks flat to me. Yeah... fixing the shadow might be the way.
Which brings me to my real crit here: The Shadow.
Instead of approaching the shadow with this muddy black, I think you'll do better justice to your frog using deep shades of green and maybe a bit of purple. Flesh out what's in the shadow -- it might not be as visible, but it should be visible, nonetheless.
And as much as you want to focus on the frog, don't neglect the environment in the way you have here. Sometimes a rough, sketchy look can work well for a background or its extremities, but this is not one of those times.
Finally, about your subject's outer edges... there are areas here where, between the frog and the shadow or moss, there's a light line. Be very careful with your edges, but don't be timid. Having that line there is a disaster for any dimensional effect. It has the same look as a paper cut-out, you see what I mean?
Incidentally, you might make these changes in Painter or Photoshop... Do you have any cg plans for this fella?
Otherwise, Awesome job on the glints and translucent effect!

Wow, great work
Try if you can blend the colours a bit more, preferably a lot more red in the green of the tree. The painting will look more like a whole that way. It looks very separated now, because of the contrast between the red and the green.

I appreciate the comments guys :D
William: Great crit. I agree about the upper arm. I had not really
noticed it untill you pointed it out. It looks better on the
original though. The scan quality is not so good.
edit: this piece is about 21"x27"

Hey RedSilas, great job!
Like William said, the shadows are a little off. I don't think he mentioned it, but the shadow of the head looks strange. If you look at the shadow of the bulge of the eye in relation to the shadow of the "point" of the nose/mouth, you can see what I mean. You can either get rid of the shadow that is on the tree above the head of the frog, or make all of the shadows extremely long vertically (as if the light is from above). Method 1 is probably the easiest, but if you go with 2 you'll have to change the specks of light on the frog's skin.
I'd do it in photoshop like William suggested
If that shadow was something other than the eye, I appologize. The picture really does look awesome... and... wait... is that frog flipping me off??!!
