Hey guys,

Im fairly new to digital painting (just started with a wacom bamboo) and honestly never done much coloring and stuff... yeah, I've been pretty lazy all the time..
Now I want to put together a application-roll for university, and realise, my skills suck, comparing to those shown here....

Could you please give me some advices on the following examples? What do I have to change, to make it more realistic? How do I "outline" things in realistic style, without making them look comic style?

Thanks a lot, for any critical comment, advice or statement!

as far as "outlining things in a realistic style" goes.....

realistically there are no lines. Natural lines would be caused by the contrast of colors of 2 different things.

I'd help but even on my 1680 x 1050 monitor I can't see the whole picture. What's with the giganormous image size? 800 x 600 is suitable enough for us to get an idea of your work.

Jesus, thats big - sorry, I'll post a smaller version again:

Anyway, this picture here shows more, what i mean:

...I really dont know how to give the titan a more realistic look.. at the moment, I'm absolutely unhappy with the picture. It just looks flat...

Today i finished the first digital picture i am (nearly) satisfied with:

...but I dont get those small lights right.. I actually wanted it to look like a city at night...
...any advices?

Thanks guys and sorry for the bad english...

I would recommend getting away from the fantasy stuff for awhile until you have a better grasp of the fundamentals. Your proportions, weight, perspective, form, color, values, etc. are all in need of work. You could learn more and put together a better portfolio by concentration on drawing things around you. You can keep practicing with your tablet. But draw something like a soda bottle with liquids and condensation on the surface. Draw some solid objects with varying textures that reflect light in different ways.

Don't be afraid to include your best stuff in your porfolio regardless of how dull (the subject material, not the quality) it may appear to you. I had a drawing of a cup of coffee in my portfolio at one time which received as much attention as my imaginary characters did.
