I'm attempting to create a photorealistically lit palm tree...my goal is for the lighting on the leaves to look like the above photo. Notice how each leaf has it's own lighting on the tips and sides, some harsh white lighting, some translucent yellow...lots of variety overall.

Now here is mine. The obvious problem is the white glare on the transparent part of the texture, I don't know how to fix that. Secondly, as I am such a novice, there is no real variation to the lighting. I have a few white lights, a few yellow...but it's not doing anything particularly great. I want a sunlit feeling with the same variation as the inspiration photo...each individual leaf have it's own unique lighting and shadows.

I'm stuck atm...it looks really fake and boring.

Oh, I use Maya 8.5

By no means am I a lighting guru, but I think a lot of what you are looking to accomplish could be done through texturing. You might try putting some of those desired colors especially the yellow, into your texture rather than trying to light it. After all, a lot of palms are yellowish brown on the tips kind of like your reference image. You could also try setting up specular maps to make certain colors of your texture more shiny than others. Also, what type of texture format and shader are you using, and how do you have your texture plugged into the shader? You have a good start on the shape, and lighting will definatly be a part of your final render, but I think you should work on your texture a little more. Keep it up!

What I would suggest is firstly, make a specular map to get rid of all the highlights where there is transparency.

Secondly to achieve the yellow colour what you could do is use an sss material you can get the effect via the backscatter layer when light travels through the object lighting it up like you see with many renders of human heads with glowing ears.

Lastly, sun light is yellow so make your light yellow too.

The reason the tips have such bright highlights is due to the sub surface scattering and the direction of the light. The plant is not being hit by the light directly but rather from beneath. The outter leaves are a thinner texture and the light enters and bounces around as opposed to the inner parts of the plant that don't allow nearly as much sub surface scattering. Look at the tip of your finger for a example of this. The light looks like its coming from up above in the corner and hitting the ground and bouncing back up causing the bright highlights on the outter edges of the plant. Texuring will help you for sure, but light direction will also help you achieve the look your trying to achieve.

God bless

you need to use your transparency map as a matte for your specularity channel, so where there is transparent there is no specularity
