Well I'm working for my animation project and building a temple and I want to get this look of pure white walls, ceiling and the ground. I tried an area light with global illumination photons. But it looked crappy with weird shadows even I've changed the merge distance of gi and radius also. I give much more photons to scene but nothing really changed much. In that video the look is just like the ambient occlusion. But I always think from the complicated way.

I also tried final gather using a solid white plane, to illuminate my scene but indoor lighting is a nightmare for me now. If anybody help me please, I will be glad. Thanks.

P.S: I use Maya 2009.

You've already said the answer yourself - it's ambient occlusion with a reflection layer over the top.
