View Full Version : Maya Texturing Issue

Hopefully this is a no brainer for you brainers, but i got myself a little problem. I built a large jet engine using maya 4.0 about a year ago. I started using nurbs to get the basic shape, then converted it to subd to keep a clean geo, then converted it to poly's to add a bit of detail. The problem is i'm now working in 4.5. When i slam on a texture on the object it goes semi transparent grey in the hardware texturing mode and also when i render ( basically the textures dont show up). I froze the transformations deleted the history (might have been a big mistake). I also tried saving my textures in multiple image formats including .jpg, .iff, .tif, .tga..and so on with no luck. I also tried exporting the object as an obj then reimporting it in and that didnt work. So i have run out of options... any ideas would be great..thanks

Here is a screen shot.

did you go into the hypershade and check out your transparency nodes?

The transparency nodes are all good, i dont even have transparency maps on the object just one color map, that's all.

hmmm. Thats wierd. Theres got to be a solution somewhere inside maya.

See there's a difference when you apply a transparency, you can see it right through it, if there's faces inside the object you can see them in maya's hardware texturing. When i add a color map to the object it makes the object semi transparent, but not the way using a transparency does...take a look at this screen shot then you'll get what i'm talking about.

Another weird thing is when i scale, rotate or move the object it changes the objects color, and i have all of maya's color preferences set to default.

does it happen on just the one image or have you tried different images? would it be alright if you e-mailed me the file and I could take a look at it? Just curious about it. Now I'd like to resolve it too.

ok

ok i figured out a crappy solution for my problem. The only thing that worked is using the "reduce" under the polygon menu, and reducing it to 0%, which basically triangulates the bloody thing. All workings now. Maybe there's a better solution out there i would still like to hear about it.

Yes this seems to happen in 4.5 and 5.0. If you UV map your geometry it usually fixes this. You could just do auto mapping until you're ready for propper mapping. I think it's Maya's way of telling you there's no UV mapping. Annoying really.

ya i thought of that but it's already uv mapped, so i dont have a clue what was wrong or why reducing the poly would fix it, totally weird!

mondo, can you post a pic of what its doing? i was going to say what tomb said, when i have that happen on like a smoothed poly, i just need to texture my uvs to fix. so maybe someone might be able to tell you if you posted a pic. when you select them faces that are transparent, can you view there uvs in the uv editor?

As I said earlier the uv's were unrapped and properly mapped. I have the problem fixed now. I think it has something to do with the nurb to subd to poly conversion, plus me going from 4.0 to 4.5 could have done it to. Thanks for your guy's help anyways.

ive had that problem when I have a pre-unwrapped model, and it only showed up when i did (view with textures) so, I usually just kept it in shaded mode only
