Fellow Modelers,

If you could please tell me how to create ambient occlusion maps? Does anyone know any good tutorials or books that explain how to create the maps?

I have been creating them in Crazy Bump and then bringing them back into Photoshop and using blend (multiply) over the the diffuse map, and then finally taking the image created and using it in the diffuse slot in Max. However, the results make my image look worse than better. I have tried making them in Max using a skylight and a white material, but I haven't been able to create an entire map due to the limitations of my graphics card and RAM. Also, when you create a AO map in Max should the light that you use to create the AO map be the same lights that are in your scene?

Please help.

Spencer

It's amazing what google does!

Typically you putt the AO in post, not back into the map slot.

The 'without occlusion' image in that tutorial looks much better than the 'with occlusion' image
