View Full Version : tiled pattern across an organic shape?

Hi guys,

I've been wondering about the best way to make, let's say a costume/suit pattern with lines/tartan/checkers , repeat itself across some organic surface. It's all fine if the pattern is irregular like wrinkles and cracks, but what if it's more specific and needs more or less perfect alignment. I usually get feathered edges of the alpha, tiles overlap, or get misaligned. Is there a way in zb to make it better or should I just try a couple of hundred times till I get it right :)

thank you

First- save a copy of your ztl just in case something goes wrong during this process.

1.) Drop down to subd level 1 and click Tool->Texture->UVTile. This remakes your UVs which is necessary for this process, but you will reimport the good ones at the end.

2.) Make sure the mesh has enough geometry to support the texture information

3.) Select the texture you want to repeat and press Tool->Texture->Txr>Col.

4.) Go back to level 1 and Import your original model to get your UV's back.

5.) Drop your polypaint to texture using Tool->Texture->Col>Txr

hope that helps

edit: also, i realized you could be talking about getting a nice tiled *sculpted* pattern across an object. You can do this using the same method. Once you have the tiled alpha on the mesh, you can mask by intensity, and further mask off areas you don't want to be affected, and then run a deform->displace on the unmasked area.

Yep, that did it for me LD, I was referring to both color and sculpted patterns. Thank you :)
