View Full Version : Arm and finger positions

Hi,
When I work, I like to rest my wrist on the tablet and curl my ring and pinky into my palm. But I find I am a little smoother if I lift my wrist and use my pinky as a kind-of guide or pivot. The one drawing class I had did not cover how to hold my stylus or position my arm/hand. Before I go too far down the wrong path, I was wondering if anyone knew the proper way to do this.

I just realized that this may be the wrong forum for this question. If there is no answer I will move it to the '2d, Illustrations and concept' forum - unless someone knows of a better place to post it.

Work in the way in which you feel comfortable, I'm not sure there's really a wrong way to hold a stylus - if a certain way becomes uncomfortable, stop holding it that way. Pretty much treat the stylus as you would a pencil or brush.

How do you do it? Do you rest your wrist or arm on the tablet/page? Do you use your pinky or the edge of your hand to steady yourself?

I'd recommend watching some video tutorials on YouTube, it really abounds with good exercises to get you started. Some might even show someone working so you can see how they hold their wacom pens, but really just think of it as you would a normal writing pencil. But watch You Tube vids, just search on their site for 'digital painting tutorials'.

I have been watching them. It's hard to tell, but sometimes it seems like only the pencil is touching. I do not know if I should try to learn to do it that way. I guess I will figure it out with practice.

I found the answer. I cut the thumb and first three fingers out of a cheap cotton glove. Now my hand slides instead of grabs. :)
