View Full Version : different facets of 3D design and your program choices
cloudkj 07-11-2003, 08:26 PM hi all,
as u can tell i'm new to 3d design. i've been messing around with wings for a few weeks now and been checking these 3d forums and learning a lot.
however, i'm still a little hazy in terms of my overall understanding of the high-level concepts of 3d design. as far as i know, it goes something like:
modeling -> texturing -> rendering/animation
i would love it if people can give me insight as to what the different steps in the process of 3d design is. and also what kind of programs (commercial and free) that are mostly used in each step.
also, can people just list the programs they personally use for 3d design in general?
thanks!
:)

Huge questions - even bigger answers!
No-one can answer this really,but a quick answer -
You've already found the modeller, there are dozens of good ones but Wings is one of the best!
AutoUV inside Wings, though I prefer UVMapper (www.uvmapper.com) plus a paint programme, photoshop or similar.
Rendering - well, lots of choice here, lot's of free ones, every one of which (in my experience is a pain in the a"*!@ to use! Povray, Yafray, 3Delight, Aqsis, Pixie etc. etc. Bryce, very good, very cheap, very slow! Vue d'esprit, bit more expensive, very good, bit quicker, all the other commercial apps, very good, quicker, more expensive all the way up to Maya, XSI, and Max - Very good, unbelievably expensive!
Rigging animation are not things I've tried but you could look at Artof Illusion, Blender, Anim8tor and loads of others! - Baz

First I posted a Cheap/Free software list in another thread : http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74824
I also found this site: http://webreference.com/3d/ extremely helpful, the Webreference goes through many elements on 3d design (all) and differenct software to achieve there goals in animation, skinning, modeling, ect...

ok, first things first.
Keep using Wings. Pop a cube on the screen and play with extrude, extrude region, scale and of course move>normal.
After playing with the cube for twenty or thirty days you will understand much more about modeling in 3D than ever before.
next thirty days see's much more of the same. Pretty soon you will be doing things automatic like, and will then be able to scupt most anything you envision
There, how does that sound?
