Hi, I'm trying to create a translucent plastic material for a project. The property of the material that I'm having trouble with is it's transparency; It needs to be like wax paper where it appears transparent if you place an object directly behind it, but looks more opaque as you move the object further away. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

It seems to be standard subsurface scattering, the main shape what you can see behind a wax paper is mainly the shadow of the object, and if the object is moved further,, in most cases, the projection will be blurred...

But a more suitable solution to your problem would be to combine an SSS shader, and a transparent shader, with glossy taransparency, so when an object is close, it will be "clearly" visible, in a darkened tone of it's color, but whan moved away, it will also fade away...

The setup for this would be like follows:
A Shellac material, with in the base slot the SSS shader, and in the shellac slot a special shader setup: only refraction visible, no highlights, or diffuse. (diffuse is black, transparency is white or 100%)

Apply a bigger amount of glossiness to the refraction, so the colors of the refracted object will only be visible, if the object is close eneugh...

Hope I've helped, Good luck!

This material will do what you're asking. http://explodingkoala.com/softex.zip it was made by the guy at www.jankin.com . adjust the amount of the refraction map to get the fade distance how you want it.
