Apply cylindrical UVW mapping
Use Textporter utility to create the image (www.scriptspot.com, it's out there somewhere)
If you want to be able to tweak a lot of details in the texture map, you should use a more complex unwrap instead of the standard cylindrical (or spherical) UVW mapping.
For a more detail explanation about the unwrap process:

The Textporter utility is free, and very easy to use. If you really want to be serious about texture-mapping, you can't do without it.
An option is aplying and unwrap modifier after the UVW map, and take a screenshot. But that would limit the wireframe template to the resolution of your screen. (Not enough most of the time)
