They are all better at certain things, just like the expensive apps.

Wings is imho the best modeller.
I don't care for blender, the workflow is just insane to me, but many will disagree.
I haven't played much with anim8or, but it seems to do it's thing pretty well.

Wings3D.....

Just use it for about a week and especially the tweak mode is really cool.

I think i will use more often in the future, though I love MAX, but I really really like this little nice program for modeling

I have to say Wings3D is the best for modeling,hands down.
Not just when it comes to free proggies either...
it's just got all the poly tools I need packaged in one of the most intuitive workflows ever.
It's like the opposite of Blender,which is just insane IMHO...
Looks like they designed it while on a heavy acid trip or something.:shrug:
Another pretty nice free one is K3D (http://k3d.sourceforge.net/new/),and then there's JPatch (http://jpatch.sourceforge.net/),
which looks like it might become pretty sweet in the future...if you like patch modeling at least.
Oh,and AOI (http://sourceforge.net/projects/aoi) is nice as well...I just never really messed with it,
seeing as I have C4D for rigging and rendering and stuff.
As for anim8or,it seems to produce nice stuff in the right hands,
I was just never really able to wrap my brain around the way it works for some reason.
