Looks great :) I just hope it comes to Australia, fast.

On a side note, FXPhd will be fun this term!

I can't help be a little excited too!

Although the cynic in me can't help but notice the way that this and the recent Dr Whos all seem to be set in the streets of modern London. How fortunate for the production companies that they don't have to blow their budget on sets!

Ohh myyyyy gawwwd!

Red dwarf is a classic, possibly my all time favourite. This is good new's (on my birthday too :D).

Although the location's have changed i hope the comedy and the gag's stay the same style.

Well, the mini-series is about them finally making it back to Earth, so... it kinda makes sense they'd be in London ;)

Awesome, i'll have to break out the dvd now, a coworker of mine turned me onto that about 8 years ago, I still owe him big time for that, one of the funniest shows ever.

Love Red Dwarf too. My only concern is that the later seasons / series were not quite as funny as the earlier ones. Naylor and Grant ran out of steam IMO. I hope they got the old magic back for this run.

the last series was indeed guff. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed (double crossed) for this one.

From Wikipedia...

Grant left in 1995,to pursue other projects, leaving Naylor to write the final two series with a group of new writers, including Paul Alexander and actor Robert Llewellyn who portrayed the character Kryten.

That somewhat explains why things weren't as funny.

I've got my fingers crossed for this one, and from what I've been told all is not as it seems RE: the plot as reported some places. ;) Although I would have been nice for them to still use a british team for the FX work. Although I'm fxphd have done a good job (and know what sort of a sh*t storm they'll get off hardcore fans if its less than expected lolol.)

I've had some contact with Danny JJ and Bobby Llew (from way before this) and they both have said its the best Dwarf script they've ever read.

I'm excited. I doubt it is the "return home" story one might expect from a Red Dwarf story titled "Back to earth." I think they're duping the fans. I love Red Dwarf and hope the DVD makes it to the US

flipnap (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=2455): A young ones reunited would be beyond epic.

They really have been placed amongst the classics yet they didnt run that many episodes. Shame.

You've seen Red Dwarf before right? Living up to past VFX work isn't going to be terribly difficult. :D

I hope it doesn’t take too long for the episodes to air here in Canada - there are a lot of Red Dwarf fans over here.

Its not the old shows it has to live up to...but other new shows. Yes I've seen it before many many times....back to back series 1 -8 (hey an insomniac gets his kicks where he can at 4am).

FX wise...Hmm seen better but I now the deadlline was short so I'll reserve judgement until I've seen all 3 parts. Story wise was a bit slow in pace for an opening episode I thought.

I'll be honest. I didn't like it. It wasn't the speical FX's though, they stood up for most scenes :)

I saw an old episode straight after and it's like night and day, the lack of audience laughter make's it seem less funny, also it seem's staged, and dare i say dull. I guess they wanted to try something new with it though.

Lets be honest, it was dreadful. Perhaps the lack of laughter track was because the audience didnt find it funny either. Very poor and old gag routines.

Agree also with chap above who mentioned the showing of an old episode straight after. It only drew attention to how unfunny the show was.

You know I realy wanted to like these new episodes after a wait of 10 years. (I'm a big dwarf fan) I was prepared to overlook last nights one as sort of them 'warming up' to things. But after tonight I have to say the story and total lack of laughs are shockingly bad. If thats the best ideas they've had for storylines in 10 years its safe to say its sunk. But I've a nasty feeling that they actually haven't wrote a single line in those 10 years except for the movie that never was.....

Some obvious problems to me (now that I've had time to sleep on it and be honest with myself) are:

1 - No laugh track....god that really is a miss. I can understand that they didn't want the plot to leak etc but was it worth it on reflection? Really?

2 - The CGI is very nice etc..but alas its totally missing the point of what made old dwarf beliveable dodgy sets and all. ... It was supposed to be set in a sodding mining ship in deep space and was a dreary dingy clostrophobic place..lots of 'ocean / military grey'. It was used universe that had been sold on, used for another 20 years then sold at a car boot sale. It was not meant to be shiney or clean looking. The only real exception to that were the bridge and officers quarters in laters series.

The cgi simply looks far to clean and not in keeping with the old series 'look' at all (by that I mean the used and used again universe, and not the dodgy set quality). Should it ever continue dump the current designer and bring in someone who understandds the concept behid what made the IP itself so sucessful back then and continues to do so. Simply put 'new Red Dwarf' looks like a totally different ship and has as much in common with the orginal dwarf sets as an xwing has with a penguin.

3 - Jokes....ie where the hell are they and have they suddenly been rationed? A comedy should be funny, although the actors all seem to be doing their level best with the material its not up to even student writing standards. The writing just seems 'off' if you get my drift. Its almost like its simply a vehical for cameos and shiney CGI (is that phantom menace era george lucas I hear spinning? lol)

4 - While they've done wonders with a very small budget was there really any need to go to extra expense for what ammounts to a small special for a very small sattelite channel? Yeah red cameras are very nice but if they have changed the production for the worse, then holding off on using them may have been a good idea. HD is not the answer to all ills.

5 - I'm very worried about the shattering and stamping on the 4th wall in tonights episode. I can only hope, pray and hope again that its going to have some wonderful resolution and nothing predictable. Not breaking the 4th wall is a sort of golden rule for a very good reason. But it can be done, but only with a lot of talent and care from writers .

Well thats my revised view for what its worth.... which isn't a lot. Its going to take a miracle in episode 3 to save its credibility in my view.

As mentioned previously this desperately needed a laughter track,i just sat and watched it without a flicker should have left this one to the memories.
The cast just looked like they were just going through the routine.very poor but to be honest i didn't expect any different.:scream:

if something is funny,i dont need a laughter track to tell me when to laugh.
The sad truth is this is plain awful! Like the last two series, Back to Earth was written by Doug Naylor who must be the Ernie Wise of the grant naylor partnership.

well well well.. what did everyone think of the grand finale?

Personally, i think the writer(s) have done a terrible terrible job, kind of going all dr. who crazy dimensions, a few crap gags...

I hate to say something sucks, but in all honesty it really did, i didnt even know it was the end until i heard the theme tune. Not a grand finale in my opinion.

Is it wierd that i laughed at the making of, that part where cryton runs out into the china town street and boots that bin into the lamps.. i laughed so hard at that part.

Some of the CGI effects were pretty good aswell, like when they were showing the cat with the sock popping acting out for the animators and that minature set infront of the camera was a pretty good idea.

I'll give it to them for the effects and the set's etc. They really did a good job with the budget and what they had, it's just a shame the writer(s) tried to go all.. well wierd basically.

Yes, yes it is :D However, as a fan of Speed Racer (the movie), the end scene from Dungeons & Dragons (also from the movie) and Trespasser the game, I understand.

They really did a good job with the budget and what they had, it's just a shame the writer(s) tried to go all.. well wierd basically.

Being in Australia I haven't seen the episodes yet, but it's funny reading the negative comments on here. The fans on the Red Dwarf forums seem fairly happy with the mini-series. Obviously nothing can reach the greatness of seasons 3 and 4, but most fans seem to be saying it's at least as good as the first two series. Ah well, I guess I'll see for myself in 2010... or whenever it arrives :)
