View Full Version : Can anyone here convert Collada to fact?
Hey All,
I'm working on a project using pdb (Protein Data Bank) models in a software called Chimera. Chimera is a scientific visualization software for molecular modeling. Chimera can export obj files of a limited number of model interpreted types. The Chimera Collada export supports more types of model interpretations. Chimera also exports rib ,povray and x3d . What I'm looking to do is export a molecular model in a specific molecular interpretation that is not supported for .obj. Does anyone use a package that convert any of these file formats to something that EIAS can read. I figure Collada is the most likely exchange format but I'm not going to be picky if there is an alternative.

Theoretically the free Autodesk fbx converter should be able to convert collada to fbx or obj which you could then bring into EI. Good luck.

FormZ can read both rib & dae (collada) and export FACT.
If the files are small & there are not too many I can convert them for you.
PM your email if you still need the files converted.

Bill,
not sure if it offers all model interpretations you need (which would be..??), but also PolyTrans could be a way to do it. PolyTrans reads PDB files, displays in several styles, and exports directly to FACT. See here:

I have successfully converted some PDB files with PolyTrans before, but they have been so huge, that the target application (C4D in that case) wasn't able to handle it.

Bernd
Hi All,
Thanks for your replies. I started to test the autodesk fbx route but my client decided that for this project to have me scratch build the model since the closest pdb was too visually complex for the graphic use intended. Your replies will not go unused as we are using pdb models quite a lot these days.
I never knew that Polytrans did a pdb conversion. That is good to know. Bernd, do you know if it can it convert the atomic stick and ribbon models? Those are the ones that Chimera fails to export as obj. The hydrophobic models translate well from Chimera via .obj through "O to Fact" and then to EIAS. As you said they are big. So far we have been lucky since the biggest one I've used has been under 3 million polys so still workable if not a bit unweildy to animate.
I'll also continue my testing on the fbx converter for future projects.
Now all I need is to have EIAS be able to render billions of polys so I can have hundreds of them in one shot and I'll be all set. :-)
Thanks again guys.

Bill,
I'd say: yes. I'm on holidays now for a week, otherwise I could test it with one of your files. If you need the answer quick, get the PolyTrans demo. If you can wait a week, I'll test it after my holidays.

Hi Bernd,
No urgency here at all right now. I was just curious in the event you knew the answer. Have a great holiday.

There is actually a couple of pdb (protein database) import scripts available for Blender.
http://www.malte-reimold.de/blender/pdb2blend.html
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:Py/Scripts/Manual/Import/PDB
Not sure about the features they supports etc, but hey it's free to try.
From Blender it should be easy enough to export to more common 3D formats.

Hi Bill,
I'm back to work (and yes, I've had a great holiday :-)). If you want, you can send a *.pdb file for a (hopefully) quick test. You'll receive my mail address via PM.
