does anyone know what the .mayaswatches foldesr are used for? i have them all over my HD, im not sure why there created. i would say 1 for ever 10 actually has something int it. i started a new project for work today, and i have swatches folder in there also. im just curious what they do and if i need them.

afaik, They're just lil thumbnails that Maya made to speed up hypershade performance! ;) It should be fine to delete em, if you like!

They dont seem to work that well at speeding up performance then. The hypershade seems to be the single sluggish thing in Maya. With a scene with 50+ shaders it takes an age for it to initialise. Anyone got any advice dealing with it in large scenes?

I think you can disable Hypershade updates
(if you can work with that)

renderThumbnailUpdate false;
// Turns off thumbnail updates

renderThumbnailUpdate true;
// Turns on thumbnail updates
