Hmmm back looking for Maya tricks in C4D again... Right what I want to know is can you centre the pivot of a C4D object like you can in Maya?

I find that when you create instances or other objects in C4D that the pivot might be the origin point, I would then have to manually move the pivot using the object axis tool to put it approx in the centre of the object. Is there a quicker way of doing this?

No. There is no function in C4D that does the same as "center pivot".

PowerAxis Plugin available at http://www.astrofish.com kind of helps you out here. It creates a dummy centre point from a selection you can then use this as the centre point for another selection. Not sure this is quite what you want though.

It should in theory (Caveat: this is based on my total lack of understanding about creating plugins) be easy to create a plugin that automatically moves an object's origin to its actual centre, or for that matter another objects centre...or its extremities....it may be out there somewhere...or may be we could pressgang some of the more programming minded of us into creating one!

Please do. We would all benefit from an even better interface. I am not implying Maya has a better interface, but it has some features that are simply handier.

I'm not sure what you guys are on about; when you create an instance it appears at the origin with it's axis located in the same relative position as the original object's axis--as it should be. If you make the instance editable and wish to center the axis, you can use the free Axis Center plugin to center the axis in the object. The only caveat is that it only works on polygon objects.

But, there's a newer version of AC that for some reason hasn't been posted at the Cafe yet. It includes many additional functions, like the ability to place a newly-created null, HN, or symmetry object as the parent of selected objects (instead of at the top of the OM), the ability to move a child's axis to the parent's axis and v.v., etc. I'll drop a line and see if we can get the new version posted for download ASAP.

Hi Adam,

There are lots of plugins that give the user extra power and ease of use. I guess the SDK isn't that bad after all.

But the point is that most of this functionality should be integrated in C4D. I don't want the plugin developers out of the market, far from it, but I want more stuff in C4D. Stuff that should be standard. Like for instance "center pivot point". And that's why I stressed to bug Maxon about it. Whenever I find things that IMHO should be a part of the standard application, I mail them to Maxon.

Cheers,
BaRa

I totally agree with you; this function in particular should be built into the app. But FWIW, Axis Center was developed by Maxon's David O'Reilly mostly on Maxon's time.

Yes, I would like to see Maxon make more of an effort to include proven 3rd party plugins into the core package. How much do I miss having Global Light Adjust?! It's really absurd that such a simple yet highly useful function is an on again off again possibility.

Also, a real sub axis tool should be high priority. PowerAxis is nice, but has limitations as well as a few bugs.
