Hi People,

it's been now a little while I'm desperately trying to create a fully IK/Fk spine (with no switch from one to the other) for a biped character on Maya and I can't find any tutorial. The idea would be to have 3 FK controls for the spine and an extra 4th control on top that I can rotate and translate and would provide a stretch as well.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks very much !

The closest I've seen for your solution is an IK Spline based spine, that can stretch, move, rotate, etc. that is controlled by 3 separate FK joints. So...FK drives IK which drives the deformation joints (the ones skinned to the character). But the IK is still able to be moved in its own space, like a child of a parent.

If you want the FK controls to move with the IK controller as its pushed and pulled...well... that's a lot more difficult to setup. Hopefully this helps.

Hi!

I have tested a thing for that and it is to parentconstrain the fk-controllers(itīs freedom-node of course) by hair follicles, it worked pretty good! It was only a small test though.
I used two follicles for each controller, one on the front of the stomach and one on the back, then 50/50 weight on the parentConstrain ...

Will test again tomorrow morning and se if I can upload a file!

Well, what the heck I made a small test :scream:

Turned out it didnīt work that great, but maybe this concept is something to work more on?
The biggest problem seem to be to keep the pivot-point of the IK-chest controller at the correct place

I have been working on a spine setup for some time and what I don't like about IKFK spine setup is that when stretch is on, spine tends to losse volume when using FK control. And primary reason for that is the way curve/surface is deformed. Though this is not that big problem considering you get an advantage of IK control moving in arc. And I think this works well with cartoony setup.

Hey Otto your idea of using follicles for driving FK along with IK is really good. Thanks for sharing.

Hi guys,

thanks so much for replying so quickly...
I indeed was hoping to have FK controls able to follow the IK deformation and the follicule system sounds like a great solution. So thank you so much for sharing !

Actually, we had this set up (fully IK FK) on "tale of Despereaux" at Framestore and I definitly enjoyed those rig, it was working extremely well !

Otherwise, the idea a bit more simple of FK driving the IK chains is fine, perhaps would be the best solution. I also tried to get a simple chains of clusters, I mean use the clusters on the IK curve as FK controls (parent ones to the others from the bottom) and the top one as an IK/FK control. But the result isn't tremendous ! And sure, scale FK controls work fine and it's right that IK spine aren't always very usefull...but it's a kind of a challenge now !

Cheers guys !

PS : yep, I worked on burning safari, thanks very much, I'm exteremely glad you guys remember this film !!;)

Haha! That was probably, because it was a very awesome dude that was doing the rigs over there :-P
Hope you are well, Florent!
Hope Animal is treating you well and you don`t get too much of a sunburn over there!
Have you found an answer to your question now?
