Title: Elvis Costello
Name: Jason Seiler
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

I wanted to portray Elvis Costello as a bit more mysterious and dark than he is normally portrayed. A mobster with his weapon of choice. As a painter I am enjoying darker and more tonal palettes and paintings, so that was also an influence on my while painting. Composition and design was very important with the execution of this piece.

wow, we're almost going picasso here. (haha). nice work, especially with the short beard and glasses (nice glazing for the glass). bottom portions does feel a little weird since it becomes very rough, especially the hand. I'm sure it was intended, but, for me personally, it feels a little weird, probably because the difference is very big. nice color pallette used here. overall, it's very nice. good job.

Thank you everyone for your comments, this paintng was just for fun, a time for me to paint what I wanted and how I wanted. Most the work I do is for publication and I'm painting someone elses idea. I love painting with oils and acrylics so when painting digitally I'm trying to paint in the same way that I would traditionally . . . it's been taking me a while to develop this technique.

And yes this is the photo reference that I used for my painting, you can see how different the colors and values are from my final work. I prefer more of a tonal look, something with more mood and less color. I rarely ever use just one photo when I paint someone, I usually have at least 5 references of the person, and for the poses, I set up my own lighting and take my own photo reference. Since this piece was just for myself I went with the one reference and then created my color palette and mood. I did this first by doing a couple small and simple color sketches or studies.

As for the comment made about the hand being blurry, this was intentional and something that for me is very real. To see what I'm saying, take a couple minutes to look at the photo reference that was posted. Focus your eyes on the rim of his glasses and without taking your eyes off his glasses try to see what his hand and the rest of the guitar look like. This puts the focus on what is important as well as where the viewer should look . . . in reality when we're looking or focusing on one thing, surounding objects will appear blurry or out of focus . . . . I wanted to capture that in a more painterly way. Also you'll notice the difference between values in the relationship between the hand and face comparing my painting to the photo reference. Notice in the photo that the values in his hand is very similar to the valiues and lighting in his face. I did what I did with the hand so it wouldn't compete with what I found interesting about his face.

Thanks again for your comments!

Thank you all so much for your comments! I've tried to post more but not sure how to get them on the forums? I believe they're in my portfolio though? I think because I tried to upload a bunch at a time it was too much? Maybe I can try again after waiting a while?

Excellent work, as usual.

Do you, or have you ever used Corel Painter?
With your traditional painting background, I’m curious to know what you might think about that app.

Impressive blog, also.

Really nice execution. When I saw the thumbnail I said "Hey, Elvis Costello!" so, definitely recognizable. My wife glanced over and was a tad more picky. She thought the face was off. I argued and found the source image which I had to admit was much shorter in the face. The large, long jaw seems like a bit of a random license to take with his features. Personally, I would have liked to see you go the opposite way with it. Still, beautiful image.

Keenerbean . . . If I had to do it all over again I'd draw him the same way . . . there are different ways to go about drawing someone, but it's also about what I as an artist want to say . . . . . . and I feel I said enough. Being picky is fine with me and I appreciate honesty, so thank you . . .

That would be fun to try . . . . I don't have the software for that kind of work, but I have thought about messing witht that. My main passion though is painting in oils and acrylics . . . I'm currently working on a group of very large oil paintings.

First I'd like to say thank you to those who commented recently who I haven't responded to. Thank you much for your comments, I'm glad that Costello fan's approve!

As to the question above, I do realistic portraits as well, but for me there's more meaning if I put my own spin on the portrait and in some instances I still exaggerate a bit. This for me improves the likeness. I actually consider myself a portrait artist rather than a caricaturist . . . I also do some landscape work as well . . . but mostly from life, and they're quick studies done in oil.
