I didnt tried in different OS.
but in XP64bit it displays any size.
(I can send snapshot if you request.)

but the problem is this showing only 1st frame.

string $window = `window`;

paneLayout;

image -image "c:/a1.gif";

showWindow $window;

if its can show gif animation in this way,that can not be called "problem",
if you really like to show gif in maya UI, you must think in different way,
longtime ago I done a script for showing animation gif, I hope I can find it in stored CD

topic is this
showing animated gif in a mel control

maybe using imgcvt utility to extract frames and load frames via a button next<>prior.
or maybe an extra python code can do this.
