How do you guys usually seperate/organize your layers when you're painting in Photoshop/PSP/etc.? For example, if you were painting a warrior character, would you have a "skin" layer, an "armor" layer, a "weapons" layer, etc.? Also, do you just use "Normal" blending mode, or is there some special method I'm not aware of?

Also, I noticed that many concept painting WIPs have paint "outside the lines". This makes me wonder if it's standard practice to just fill in the shapes in each layer (without trying to keep inside the lines), then go back and fix things up with the Eraser tool?

Thanks.

Sketch or line-art at the bottom layer.
A "colouring" layer on top of that, set to "multiply".
Don't fix it up with the eraser, but add a layer mask to it, so you just have to erase stuff once instead of over and over again if you want to make later adjustments in that layer.
