We're always looking for new modelers!

Working on the a City Block called "Silver Square", this is where a good amount of action takes place:

FAQ

Who are the Teen Titans?

The Teen Titans are a group of superheroes created by DC comics. It is a comic series (still going strong) as well as an awesome animated TV show. It features (mostly) 5 heroes with different kinds of powers, but features many villains!

What is the Titans Short Fan trailer and why should I help?

The Titans Short fan trailer,is basically the production of a "fake" Trailer meant to give the impression that an actually 3d movie is going to come out. This project was developed to better our skills in several areas:

+Character Modeling
+Architecture Modeling
+Compositing
+Animation
+Efficient use of resources (computers, etc)
+Advertising techniques
+Collaborative skills

It is also being developed to be pitched over to DC comics and Warner Brothers, to see if they would like it. Even though they may not realize this trailer as a movie, hopefully they could use some helping hands. If not...at the least this will look great on your resume once complete!

What do you have to work with now?

Currently, we have two modelers...who have done ALOT on this fan-film. Currently we've received some donations, and we have 2 large renderlabs contributed by other teammates. We have been working on over 20 characters, as well as 2 large city blocks with hundreds of 3d props (including those donated by other fans). There is well over 100 pieces of artwork, concept art, textures and decals created by yours truly.

Most importantly, we have a script to base this trailer off of. :)

Why a Titans Short Fan trailer? Why not something original?

It all started out with modeling a Titan for fun. Then I started modeling more characters and thought that this should be a short. I've done a previous animated fan-short (http://www.sonicverseteam.net/chrisguy/) and figured I could do the same with this, but make it...shweet. I've always loved trailers for the anticipation it brings.

As for an original project, once this project is complete, THEN I'll have the skills to make an original and worthwhile short (and I have a couple in mind...including some sci-fi shorts that I have written while making this trailer). But for now, if I can get this trailer complete, we can move on to more advanced and original work.

I would like to help!:

We NEED MODELERS!!!

Its really hard for me to tackle every single portion of this project so it would be great if I get any extra helping hands.

What program are you using.

What is done so far and what still needs to be done ?

Thank you!

I'm using 3Dsmax 2008 (Student Edition) :)

I've already completed a storyboard that mimicks a kind of news report. Right now I'm in the middle of designing a city and setting a tone before going into animation. ;) What is needed is help for architecture design and extra character creation.

Maybe I will be able to help you with some post production stuff.

- Rendering , compositing, effects... or "Production Adviser" type things.

I use MAX 2009.

By the way how many characters will there be in this all together.

I think it is important to have a really good storyboard or animatic
worked out.

Sounds good!

There will be more than 15 different characters (human and non-human), I'm fleshing out a storyboard to be an animatic as we speak.

That would be great if you help me out with post processing, thank you sir! :D

Thats looking really really good!!

I just saw your post about animation between Max and Maya normally if you export the scene as an .fbx file you should be able to transfer the animation as well.

not sure how it all goes but there are some more guys in these forums (thinking of Softdistortion and BOY1DA who have done those conversions if I remember well :) )

looking forward to more

Hi there Chrisguy, I'm lovin' what you've got so far. Re getting animation from Max to Maya. You could try using the point cache http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/tips/tip_index/point_cache/ . I think it works via fbx anyway.
Good luck with your project.

@Chrisguy: Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it.

I have successfully and with ease exported animation from a rigged character in maya, into max for rendering, no problem there. FBX chaches the animation onto the model, so all the animation is on each vertex. It works fine, also with turbosmooth added on the model, or whatever you need to do after animation.

The problem I think, will be in exp/imp the rig from max to maya.
I don't think fbx can export rigged information, joints, constraints, skin and so on, but I'm not sure.

You'd probably need to re-rig in maya and then export the point data. I have The Setup Machine 2 (maya2008) which makes rigging a breeze. So if that's a solution you wanna try, I can help do some of the rigs. I haven't got the face machine which complements TSM. I've been toying with the idea for a while, so I might just pick it up.

Thanks! You guys are cool cats. :D

Caveman: I did some research on FBX and it looks like its able to export/save animations, like a point cache modifier and it might be what I'm looking for. I'm in the process of developing a facial rig however so I might need to set up an animation pipeline between Maya and Max in order to get the most out of both software ;) Thanks for the suggestion!

I dont have Maya but I hope I can plan it so that I can involve Maya somehow (everyone but me and another seem to use Maya)

DoneShole: Guess Im right on :D Sounds good! I'll mess around with pointcache to see how it goes.

Doffer: Thats what I'm thinking since I have a Face Rig and I'm also using Brad Noble's Skeleton Rig (after failures with my own -_-).

But perhaps we can use maya for 1st pass animation? :)
Sure we can talk! Although I only have AIM, Yahoo and Skype (by request) ^^ (chrsguy3)

Thread -
I've got done with our first Animatic, the Newsreel animatic:

http://www.titans-project.com/images/viral/terra.jpg

Click here to download (http://www.teentitans-movieproject.com/project_files/Viral%20Animatic/Titans%20-%20Newsreel%20Animatic.rar)

Requires DIVX and WinRAR (30 Day Trial)

Its cheap in the beginning but gets better as the movie goes by. The movie contains mostly sketches. I had to use my voice for the reporter, so it might be a while until I find a good reporting voice.

I have never done an animatic, so im happy ;)
I'll be able to establish reusable points of interest to model and get to production.
If you have any constructive advice by all means let me know.

Thanks to those who joined! :)

I will watch it a few more times to see if I have any input.

Thanks for the update

BOY1DA

Watched it a few times...

One idea I had was to try to use as many fully rendered still images for the news report.
That way you won't have to spend too much time animating and rendering some of the news footage, maybe only animate the shots of characters talking ?

AnthonyThompson
05-12-2009, 12:03 AM
Hey chris I watched the animatic. I you did a really nice job however I was also having problem hearing what was going on and I did plug in my head phones and still no luck =(
I couldnt hear what exactly going on detail by detail but I think i got the idea.

It looks pretty good, I grew up in the area of the Ninja Turtles. I personally like cartoons where good guys end up beating the crap out of the bad guys. You know action packed.

However the ninja turtles is not TT and as stated I've never seen the show. But if it fellows the story line and has the same feel as TT. Then you / we should be good to go. Also if theres any chance of the sound getting fixed let me know.

I'm going to watch it a few more times and add some more feedback.

Good Job cheers....

AnthonyThompson
05-13-2009, 01:04 AM
Hey Chris I watched it a few more times (in a dark dark room, with no one else around). Anyway yea it made a lot more since. Yea I agree with Boy1da about trying to use still renders for the news reports. That could really help out a lot maybe even shorten down the scenes some.

I noticed that you had a few action packed scenes...
Also I was thinking that when they talk about the heroes destroying some of the town trying to catch the bad guys lets show that. Maybe we could show some of the Starfire v.s the mutant fight too.

I think adding a few more would really bring the story to life and get more peoples attention.

Just an Idea, take it easy man .... Anthony

Hi anthony and boy1da,

thanks for your critiques! Although I cant do ful rendered still images because I dont have everything modeled yet. Thats why I'm asking for people to join :)

What I can do is put more refined images, also have some talking scenes.

I hope to put up some action scenes in there, thanks again!

What I mean is for the final version of the movie, you should use fully rendered images instead of trying to animate them all... only use animation for the talking parts.
The animatic is fine as it is.

Hello Chrisguy! I'm going to give my 2 cents, as I've worked with short CG cinematics and am aware of how important organization is with this stuff.

What you have so far, especially regarding the models and lighting scheme concept, is very beautiful! I have a suggestion that might make it easier for more modelers to come on board, as this is a modeling-intensive project.

I watched the animatic, and in a true news-report style there are a lot of cuts and a lot of different environments used. Figure out how many of those environments can be re-used. I see that you have a city already modeled, which you can reuse a lot. You have a farm background in a scene that can be reused a few times, too. Also, I would take into account that this is TEEN TITANS, which is known for wacky gradient backgrounds so you may find that you can cheat out of having to create some elaborate environments

http://www.titanstower.com/assets/animated/behind%20scenes/sandiego2004/promocards/teentitansCNpromocd.jpg

http://www.comicobsessions.com/CO5AspenPrints/Print_DC-TeenTitans01a.jpg

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XWXJJX3KL._AA280_.jpg

etc. (which can be made in AfterEffects or Realflow)

From what I see in your animatic, as far environments go you have a:

newsroom interior

city (your main environment)

Irish pub

sweatshop ext.

bridge with city

hotdog stand

stores

farmland with shack

ruined city

office interior

a few burning buildings

Havertown sign

construction scene

...and whatever else

My advice is to make a list of what assets you need, because as of now there are going to be a LOT of them. Also stuff like the bridge and the hotdog stand should be noted. If you have the list already, make it public. I say this because a modelor might not say yes to what looks like a huge scene (if he works, etc.), but could possibly help out with an asset of two. I think you will get more help if you break it down that way.

Boy1DA is right about using still images for a lot of stuff in here; it will truly cut down on rendering time and most of your camera shots are static. When it comes time for animators to work on this, you should render it out with a timecode and number each shot. Can't stress that enough. DON'T BE AFRAID TO CUT SCENES OUT, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO RE-RECORD AUDIO! I've had to do that every time. You will be able to get it done realistically and your artists will appreciate it.

If this gets finished it's going to be REALLY cool. I'd really like to see it finished! Good luck with everything, and I'll see if I know any modelers with time on their hands to help out.

Good Luck!
-April Young

April Young - Thank you so much! I figured I could do a bit of cheating by using matte paintings for backrounds and reusable city areas for some shots. :)

I dont think im familiar with that. Is it similar to an X-sheet? I have a good book on 3dsmax animation and im told to use a storyboard/index cards. ;)

You can actually make a timecode in AfterEffects (I'm assuming you have AfterEffects. If not, most editing programs have some sort of timecode option). There are some Maya plugins that can put a timecode in the playblast window, but for Max playblasts I just do it in AfterEffects.

Make a new Composition

Import the footage

Make a new Layer Solid, preferably black or white

On that solid, go up to the Effects menu and click timecode! Whoo hoo! You can adjust it as you see fit! Also, you can manually number the shots next to the timecode. I find that it's easy to break up scenes and shots separately

So for instance, looking at your animatic, it has a motion graphics news opening. Then it starts out with a newsroom scene. Then you have a zoom-in to about a medium shot, but it's still in the newsroom. Everyone has their way of numbering shots, but I would number the news motion graphic intro at 01_01, the first shot of the newsroom at 02_01, and the shot where it zooms in to 02_02, since they're the same scene (set) but different shots. Then the Havertown Reconstruction interview would be 03_01, etc. Even if it's a render or a matte painting, it's a different scene if the set has changed.

The reason for this is that you have a lot of city scenes, and you'd be surprised how many animators (tons) accidently import the wrong scene into thier shot. They end up animating to the wrong camera, and have to do it over. The timecode will allow you to know how many seconds you're dealing with (or giving to someone). It will show you where to cut stuff out too, as I think the longest camera shots in American cinema are about six seconds long. This seems like a lot of work but for anything over a minute long it's completely worth it.

I love the concept art that your making. You really have an eye for color! I can't wait to see the finished matte paintings. :)

My goal is to find some members who can do modeling for the Animatic. Buildings, sky textures, lighting, etc. Also I need someone to help me out on the sound effects and music (must own a music library...or make good music)

I'll do a bit more work on the bridge, for the final composite it may be just matte painted with extra details. I thought of a shot that doesnt need to have the camera move around the model. Also before i removed the textures off the bridge i had a beautiful light rig, ill put that up once i get the basics down.

I've got some really great advice and critiques from my friend and editor, and have decided to go another round at the teaser trailer. Here's some concept art for the up-coming final teaser animatic.

Wow pretty awesome stuff man...so is this going in the animatic or just some stuff that's going to be in the background.....also do we have like a ummm concrete animatic or is it like a still evolving one...because so far i have two different ones...or are both animatics two parts to one big one animatic

Chrisguy
08-29-2009, 11:09 AM
Still an evolving animatic but getting very concrete. I was trying to get the animatic to make some sense so hopefully this final one will do the trick. May take a long time tho. I'm the only artist on storyboards.

Policemen, seen in the beginning and middle of the teaser trailer.
Working on only busts...i dont need to model the entire bodies. Face will be used as scratch model.

Think this is great, though the style of the policeman isnt matching the other styles. If his face is stand in, ignore this.

Looking good Chris!

Small suggestion on your teaser.

Would help if you also get one setup for low end users /fast loading -640x480 via a service like Vimeo or Youtube etc. It's no good if people click away before they see your work cause it takes to long to load or if they use Win 64 OS with bad QT support!

I think thats a great idea! I'll check into vimeo and youtube and upload the animatic from there. I'll also do this for the next one. I really didnt think about low end users which was a big problem. Thanks!

-Airflow
I definitely agree with you, I'll try to make the policeman's face more anime-ish to match the style of the other characters.

I also lessened the realism of his face to match the style of the rest of the Trailer. Thanks Airflow!

I had an interesting convo about the effects of trailers and why some are better than others, also what makes them great and what makes them suck.

So I revised my teaser trailer COMPLETELY, it's simple and to the point:

http://www.titans-project.com/project_files/teaser/storyboard/simple1.jpg

http://www.titans-project.com/project_files/teaser/storyboard/simple2.jpg

I should really clean this up for presentational purposes. Make it all professional and industry worthy.

Chris you are making me look lazy with all the work you are doing in here.

I think I liked the idea for the first trailer better, but that one may be a bit too much work.

Anyway it's looking good so far, keep up the pace.

Chrisguy

Thank you boy1da, I thought the first trailer was good too, I'll see what i can do

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did some testing animation and compositing
I wanted to cover several areas:
-particles
-Object ID
-Basic compositing
-Color correction
-Light layers
-Motion Blur
-Timewarp (300 effect, although it didn't turn out well...you may not notice any slo-mo)

Hi Guys, this trailer is still going on. :) I dont think I'm willing to let it die..

For the past months I've been trying to figure out how to best work on this project, what kind of pipeline to take. I had to write some plans so I could get this done and I think I came up with some concrete solutions and a plan. I can't go into detail here :(

I've been working on a city scene, and its too big for my crappy computer to handle (had to sell my power comp to make ends meet). I can't render this in full, so heres a draft render of "Silver Square", a business and entertainment district in Jump City..the setting of the story:

http://www.titans-project.com/project_files/showcase/silversquare.jpg

Here's some of the buildings that I'll be using in "Silver Square":
http://www.titans-project.com/project_files/showcase/buildings.jpg

Although I'm supposed to continue modeling this area of the city down the road, heres a city block called "Havertown", a poor area:
