Hi guys ,
thanks all for your comments.
metalspring, dyb3k, stryker, EricDLegare, Remi & Detached > Thanks a lot guys !
ragdoll > Pizza and coffee are the main food you can find in Supinfocom :)
Mathieuuuu > our sound designer was basycally one of us : Remi.
He dedicated a part of his time on all the sound environement and we helped him to record some specific sounds (balls, foot steps, etc)
Then it was as quite everything in the movie, it means a joined discussion between three of us on each new version to know what sounds (thats the word) good or not.
But that's definitely him who bring the sound effects track to life.
Concerning the music we worked with an external musician (dasoundesigner) We brought him some music extracts taken from movies or just CDs we thought that can fit our movie. Then we tried to deliver him as early as possible a correct animatic with the right pace to help him feel the rythm of the movie. We also described what was our ideas in term of feelings on each sequences/scenes.
With all those elements he started to work and we discussed between the team each version to gave him feedback.
Once again, the most implicated in this work was Remi.
Gomar > ;)
vfxnerd > we do not have any scans of story board, probably because it was too simple. We chose to spend more time on animatic due to complex camera movements we wanted, and so the story board was often just simple shaphes to define characters or important elemens of the composition. Anyway, you can find several pictures about the pre production on our website in the making of section or on this flickr gallery : http://www.flickr.com/photos/iamyog/sets/72157616299827817/

It looks really cool. And I am sure you guys have put a hell lot of effort in this because it shows. I liked the characters a lot. The only thing is that story was not to my personal taste so I got lost there. It kind of felt more like Nike commercial to me. But love the camera work and how the sequences are organized.

Thanks everyone for the comments !
I'm coming on this forum since late 2001 so you can imagine how happy I am to be featured on the front page :)
Anyway, as requested, here's some explanations concerning production times.
During our 3rd year in Supinfocom, the rough idea was chosen through a jury of teacherd and the team borned. It might be around beginning 2007.
We worked on the common 3rd year scheduled work (it means, directing a 1mn movie alone to learn the software) and in the meantime we thought about the story.
At the end of this year, 2 weeks are dedicated to build the first 2D animatic. It was something close to shit that the school threatened to cancel...
Summer 2007 was some kind of break as we spent 10 weeks in internship separated in different places/country. So we basycally used this time to build a consequent database of photos, players, graphic illustrations, references, etc. We also were lucky as Kevin Couliau (http://asphalt-chronicles.com/), a french photgrapher for a french Basket magazine (Reverse (http://www.basketsession.com/)), went to harlem and had a photo shoot for us that'll be greatly helpful later.
4th year in Supinfocom started in October 2007, we spent 4 months on story/3D animatic and character design. At the end of January 2008 we had our final animatic which is nearly 98% the same as the final movie (2 shots suppressed and some timing corrections)
February was a full month of modelling, characters were ready (mod/rig/maps) at the end of february/mid march. Same thing for most of streets/playground.
At this period, we clearly separated our tasks on the movie. Guillaume started the animation while Remi and I took everything else is charge.
We sometimes grabed a videocam to shot ourselves running on the school parking or playing basketball as reference for him.
He also used and1 mixtapes ( http://www.and1.com/videos.php ), because I guess they were far better than us in using a ball ^^
For the third sequence (the final part) we were a bit short in pre production time to make enough illustrations about everything. So we had some rough sketches about what we need, and we chose to work in a strange (but I hope efficient) way : We built some 3D elements we arranged on photoshop to defined how our environement should look. So we blended design with nearly already made elements. Once validated, most of the 3D elements were ready so we can quickly build our final set.
This is a full HD movie rendered in scanline, so we spent a few weeks with Remi to find a proper and efficient way to light our scenes and test some final compositing work. We had to know how far we need to go in 3d and what can be done in compositing to achieve the look we were expecting. Our first rendered shot was this one :
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3419721674_9fb166eabf.jpg
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/iamyog/3419721674/)(http://www.flickr.com/photos/iamyog/3419721674/)
Then remi alternate lighting/compositing with sound effect (I spoke about that in my first comment here : http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5796964&postcount=12 )
The movie was totally completed for the mid June.
Beginning 2007 : rough idea selected
June 2007 : first crap 2D animatic
Summer 2007 : holidays and references research.
October 2007 : Story/3d animatic/character, environement design
End of January 2008 : 3d animatic done.
End of March 2008 : Characters done
Mid June 2008 : That's all folks :)
Guillaume is currently studying in the french school of animation "Les gobelins" in Paris while Remi and I are working as freelance cgi operators in London.
We didn't give up the idea of making another project together even if it's not easy at all due to work.
Actually... if you are a rich producer with pockets full of money you have no idea what to do with, we'd be glad to be your next investment in film production :D
Thanks again everyone for your feedback

great work on animation, and 5 stars on the modelation.
But i think u really need to work much more the sound design. I think u missed a lot of sounds and that takes away the life of the charaters, and the life of the movie.
But nice work;)

Well done guys, 5 stars for the production and creative work, I just dont really get the story and the conclusion. It seems like a bad dream, I was expecting a twist at the end to explain it.

Great work guys.
I really liked the second part, when everything became "surrealist". The fact that it was a sort of fight against drugs, was'nt obvious if I well understand the explanation.
But forget about, that was a great demonstration of talent ;-)
Five stars well deserved.

Aperez > Congrats for Imagina, Annecy, Siggraph, motionographer, etc etc etc :) see you soon around a drink.
john banana > is it true that you used to be beaten each time you played ping pong against kuzco ^^
Tygar > the movie is inspired by the story of a black basketball player...
Dave > message forwarded, see you next (sunny) time in Hoxton square.
vfxfanatic > I gave some informations about that on my previous post. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5804026&postcount=25
No... Sup didn't place us. Sup gave us the opportunity to direct our own movie, I think it's far enough.
Remi and I went to London in september and we spent a few time without any job (due to crisis ? who know...)
But anyway, we are now both working as freelancers ("on touche du bois" as we say in france)
Guillaume is still studying in "Gobelins" school in Paris.
Thanks again for your views and your comments.

Hey ! I'm Mickael, SUP3, Arles...
Like already mentionned, this is great work. Some notes in the credits or intro title would have helped understanding the plot, but eh, still, it technically is impressive. Oh BTW, is there any reason for the default scanline, apart from the rendering time it saved ?
Anyway, the sound editing is just great. We studied it with the (cool) belgium guy (who's name i forgot...) and geez, that was the hell of a slap in the face. Ur guy did an awesome job on it. Too sad some people can't feel it :/
Keep up the good work, and I wish you the best for the future :)

very nice!!
I loved the camera angles and motions. the sound also gives a lot of lonely and paranoid feeling to the character. great aritstic and technical work. Makes me really jealous seeing you guys having both of those skills!
Wasn't there a movie about Earl? i think I saw a movie about a very similar story. don't know if it's about the same guy tough.
