Hey all, first thread ive ever made here, so i hope ive put it in the right place...
Anyways, im halfway through making a model of my latest creation, an anime inspired girl called aiko... (pics will be up soonish, or when i think shes ready, so probably a while :p)
Anyway, has anyone here every tried making realistic wings in 3dsmax? I can think of a few ways i might be able to do it, but they all seem a tad complex...
I want quite realistic angel wings for her, although shes going to be in a kind of anime style...
So, has anyone tried this before, or know of any links to helpful places?
Thanks a lot for any help :)

A good while back I saw a tutorial on creating a birds wing (sorry so long ago I've no idea where now)
But the key feature was to use a lot of thin rectangular 2 sided plains and put bitmaps of real feathers with alpha onto them. The result was very good.
It's a popular technique for doing long hair, works well

So you want to create "anime-like" wings, just because the size:
Anime figures, especially "warrior" types can bee seen with pretty big wings, almost too big... But you already know that, I think...

So, a good way would be to create a wing like that is to look up an anatomy studie on birds, than create the base skeleteal and muscular structure of the wing...
When you're done, you could create one really detailed feather, with poly modelling, or create the vein of the feather, and use, e.g. Shag:hair to create the rest of it. (I think, Shag would be able to handle this type o' problem, to save lots' o time, even shading could be done properly)
So, if you've got one feather, you could instance it all the way, to create the bigger feathers of the wing, the ones witch will appera a bit big on the rendering, to be ceated by just texturing...
Now turning to the smaller feathers, you should render the bigger feather from front, and use it as an alpha source, and specular mask, and the Z channel as a bump...
I thing now you've got it,
From now on it's like Clanger wrote it...

Modelling one feather can be useful, if you do it right, you've got one texture source (with perfect bump!) without resolution limits.

Good luck!

Shes in black leather, and theres going to be chains and stuff as well, so it should be quite a challenge...
Anyways, thanks again!
