Ahoi, first output of the Planet of Karkaea is online. Second output is May 8th, which will be rendered much nicer.

This is my senor thesis at the School of Visual Arts in NY NY

Updated Link - color corrected and shots fixed.

(Keep in mind while watching : EVERY SCENE has been touched with Mel, Python, or after effects expressions. I'm a scripter/rigger, and that is what is being shown.)

Some highlighted points -

The tree - the branches grow leaves in on 600 branches through math (expressions in maya)
The underwater life - Using a crowd control system currently code named "Crowded"
( Vid ) Hatching insect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0blur_CRNA) - A rig that can grow from baby to full insect with a full hatching egg and procedural walking system.
( Vid ) The runners (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qls9TATjjVc) - these little guys are being controlled through "Crowded"
The credits - Animated incandescents and other issues had me writing scripts just to custom render out this scene for animated final gather.

I hope you like it.

The first 1:30 it's so dark it's hard to tell what's going on. Might just be youtube, I would upload to vimeo as well. My suggestion, instead of showing things in scenes like you have now, why not show just the things you've scripted, like the branches and leaves growing, etc. since that's what you're trying to showcase, make that the focus, instead of bizarre camera moves and lighting that isn't working for me. I suppose you could use the scenes as filler, but I would focus on the actual work you want to showcase.

My .02

Thanks for the crit. Yeah, its a little dark, this first output was a little rushed, I'll work on things for the second output. (Youtube did make it darker)

I suggested to my thesis advisor doing this as more of a technology demo and he wouldn't let me do anything of the sort. So I tried to make it something it wasn't (I guess). I'll work on better camera angles/timing for second output. Thanks

pretty dark for sure.
I noticed two of your creatures that are running pass through each other at 1:59. Dont know if they are supposed to or not, just thought id mention it.

I was hoping that wouldn't be too noticeable.... In my furry to make deadline, I accidentally turned off my plant collisions and creature bump check, so they are running through each other unintentionally.... I didn't notice I messed up till after I rendered the scene and it was under 24 hours to deadline so I couldn't resimulate the plants or rerender.

Crowded supports jumping, collision detection with the ground, other animals, hair (little shrubs), and ncloth (leafy plants); all of which is not "on" in this output..... May 8th will be a much better output.
