View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Lord McGoat - 2d/3d
LordMcGoat 04-03-2009, 11:29 AM After a few years of lurking on forums around the internet, I've decided to try and push to become a more active member of the community.
I'm hoping to improve my skills in painting and concept art over the coming year, but for the time being I expect I'll hide in the snug refuge of working in clay, or black and white, directly from reference. Boo.
Anyway, here's some older stuff to get the sketchbook under way
Charcoal studies -

Study of eye of the David. I did a study for each facial feature, and each one was a massacre when compared to the original :)
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4334/davideyev.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/my.php?image=davideyev.jpg)
I think that's enough uploading for one day. All my recent stuff is just sketching really, but I'll try and get some up when I can borrow a camera or a scanner.
After that I'll do my best to keep it ticking over with new stuff so that I can work with any feedback.

i love how the muscles on the back of the clay torso are clearly defined. your knowledge of the human anatomy must be dead solid, hats off. :)
i'd love to see some of your imaginative stuff.

amazing anatomy man, they look like they are real pictures, even though i don't like when art is just like photography, but since they are studies those are amazing, please show us more of what you can do when adding your own touch !

Welcome here!
Nice start with some full body studies and those clay works are also good, I know working in clay is not a easy task.
Looking forward for more stuff.

Oh my god! I completely forgot I had created this thread! *cough* Not the start that I had hoped for...
Was great to come back and find I had some positive replies though, thanks everyone for the feedback.
shapemaster - I was lucky with the model on that torso - not an inch of fat, and never moved :) My imaginative stuff hmmm... doesn't really exist at the moment, it's really one of the reasons I started this sketchbook thread. I keep wanting to do it, but I keep thinking well maybe I need to study anatomy a bit more first, or do a master copy, or something, staying more within my comfort zone. I'll do some soon though, and put it up, but it'll be crap :)
anandpg - Thanks so much for the kind words, your thread is a real inspiration. With regards my training, well I did a degree in computer animation at Bournemouth, although I did practically no traditional drawing or sculpting in that time. Then after being in industry for a bit, I went to the Florence Academy of Art for 9 months, where I studied whilst working remotely as a character artist for the company I'm at at the moment, which was a full-time gig. So it was the most intense year of my life in that regard, but the difference in my work before and after is kind of like night and day. Hopefully I'll go back there someday...
Anyway, here's some more recent stuff from my sketchbook, probably a bit less interesting than the first stuff I posted, but this is the sort of stuff I'm doing at the moment, since I have less time than I would like -
First off, studies from the Peck anatomy book:

Couple of studies from a cast I have. I don't know where cast is taken from, but it's a really great foot :) I've yet to find one as interesting in real life, mind...

And a zbrush sketch of it -

Actually really enjoyed doing that sculpt, think I will finish it off some time.
This is a study from Michael D. Mattesi's book "Force - dynamic life drawing for animators". He draws like an angel on crack. I only just discovered his book, but I think it might be my favourite book on drawing.

Study from a Ruben's. I did it with a 3b, and as soon as I started putting in tone really wished I'd used charcoal. I couldn't get it anywhere near the darkness of his without putting down lots of layers, but you can see on his original that he's defined the tones with just a few lines or a single bit of cross hatching.
I won't post his original here because it will make mine look like a dog's cock. Heh, well maybe I will. A few pages in, so they're not side by side... :)
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2205/rubenscopysmall.jpg (http://img7.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rubenscopysmall.jpg)
I also thought while I was doing it, what is the most productive way to study a piece like this, which is so much more dynamic than a Bargue. Do you just try and copy it exactly, like a Bargue (which is what I tried to do)? In which case you can't really lay down the strokes like he did (at least I can't), because you have to keep refining the line, which he just threw down. Or do you try and stay faithful to the way he put down the marks, in which case you'll risk losing a lot of the original gesture?
I suppose really it's just what you want to get out of it isn't it, but would be interested to hear people's thoughts on it

Hey Chris! Really enjoying your thread! Great work on the sculpt! Keep posting! The question you posted about master-copies is a difficult one, so I won't attempt to answer it:D For me, I first try and do whatever it takes to get the gesture right, and then try to get the values as close as possible.

Thanks guys for taking the time to look/give feedback.
Spent last week on holiday visiting relatives in Italy. Death by incredible slow pace of life ensued, but meant I got to do some anatomy sketches. Not really sure if there's any point posting up stuff that's just copied out of a book though, so I'll keep that stuff to myself.
Managed one day in Rome though, so went to the Vatican. I've got a lot of reference of the Belvedere torso, and a couple of the sculpture portraits there, enough to do proper 3d studies from, I think. I'm going to see if 3dFramework will let me upload them on their ftp so I can share them here, since I have no web space anything to store them.
Got as many as I could from the Laocoon, but the bastards won't let you go behind. I can't find pictures anywhere of what that sculpture looks like from the back. One of the guys working there was up for letting me get in behind to take reference photos, but his boss put his foot down. Would mean disabling the alarm there. I will try again next time, armed with my girlfriend in a short skirt.
Anyway, work wise, just a couple of drawings that I did there -
Belvedere Torso

Laocoon foot
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4158/laocoonfoot.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=laocoonfoot.jpg)
Pencil technique leaves quite a lot to be desired I know. Booo.
I'll get something more interesting up here soon, I promise :) As soon as I find the time...

stridiggio - Thanks for the link. I came across that too, but I don't know if that guy just did it from his mind or whether he had reference somewhere for it.
batte - Thanks man :)
I thought I'd post a couple of the entries I've done for the sculpting challenge over at 3dtotal -
This one was done for the last challenge, which was celebrity caricatures. (5 hour time limit)
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9858/sculptingchallengefinal.jpg (http://img10.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sculptingchallengefinal.jpg)
This one is for the current challenge, which is a self portrait. I have to say I'm not thaaat comfortable with posting pictures of myself just 2 pages into my sketchbook thread, feels a bit odd. So if you wanna see them you can go to my original post on 3dtotal -http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=713449#post713449
The idea of skin peeling initially came up as an idea to show my obsession with mortality. Looking back on it though, it's probably a reflection of my interest in anatomy.
6 hour time limit on that one. Not very happy with the outcome, and nearly died of stress doing it, but as ever a good learning experience

Impressive sculpting! I like th etyle of it, it reminds me watercolor strokes. Good job, especially considering how fast you made it.
I wouldn't cut arms of models, looks a bit abrupt.

Aww thanks for the nice comments, great to wake up to :)
mister3d - You're right about the cutting off. With the sculpting challenges, you have a base mesh, which tends to restrict you to just the upper arms (the lower limb on the self portrait was made out of the mesh given for the teeth), so the question is always how to end the arms and torso. With the iggy pop sculpt I felt a little like the rounding at the ends of the arms made him look amputated, rather than cropped, that's why I went with a harder edge on the self portrait. I finished it where I did to try and keep the composition curving round back to the head. But it kind of looks sliced, like you said. So the hunt to figure this out continues...watch this space...
Glad I bumped into your sb.
There's some inspirational stuff in here!
Really love that Iggy Pop sculpt!

As ever, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply guys. Not a whole lot more to report here, been busy with work and life.
Just tentatively dipping my toe into the concept art waters, did these silhouettes on the train. With the first 2 rows I was just playing with shapes, not going for figurative stuff at all, just seeing what shapes I thought worked, and if they looked like figures then I kept them. I found that to be a little restrictive, as things like legs and arms don't tend to come along that often if you're not trying to draw them :)
In the second 2 rows I put in shapes with a rough idea of what I wanted first. Much easier to get a result, although harder to subconciously create ideas. Anyway, it's really early days with all this stuff, but it's where I want to push this thread a little bit. Was really fun to do, a lot less stressful than observational drawing...

I don't think I'm gonna be able to update this for a while, since all my free time will be taken up with the hardcore modelling challenge. I've got some professional work that I'm allowed to show, I'll post that up next week. To try and make it look like I'm still doing stuff for this thread :)

It's been a while since I checked back here, so it's really nice to see people have taken the time to reply. Thanks for that.
I actually thought I wrote a post a few weeks ago explaining that I was gonna be quiet because I was entering the hardcore modelling challenge, but I must've forgotten to hit send, or dreamt it or something. Anyway, I've finished my work for that challenge, so I'm posting it up here to keep this thread ticking away -

Great, great work. In the silly version the upper lip looks a bit too sharp to me. The hair fringe flow looks not too convincing as I can't imagine hair to be kind of folded under such a straight hair, if you see what I mean. That's to say the hair in that part must follow the main direction of combing.

Hello everyone,
Sorry for the lack of updates on this thread. I'd come up with an excuse, but really I'm just a lazy bastard. This'll be a bit of an image dump I'm afraid, and nothing that's not already on my bloggy wog, but I will follow it up with some stuff more appropriate for a sketchbook thread soon.
