personally i find Maya more stable more usable {memory usage is mush better managed on linux}

as for faster never compared actual speed but i would imagine there might be a slight speed advantage

down side is plugins and the like not all are made for use in Linux

I'm using maya under linux (rh 7.3) - I'm not sure it is fastes but it's more stable and usable than in windows. I don't imagine working under windows with maya again.

I haven't gotten used to the workflow under Linux (my little windows keep falling behind the main Maya window), but what's real nice is you can run Maya with the most minimal UI for the best performance.

running a batch render at console makes it even faster (or less wastefull, whichever sounds better)

This is a problem with the way you have your window manager set up and it can be easily solved.
Under KDE 3.1 you would do this in Control Center -> Desktop -> Window Behaviour -> Focus -> Click raise (deactivate it)
Hit apply and you're done.

There should be a similiar option under Gnome, however I have never used it and therefore do not know where to find this option ;)

i worked with a scene of a graveyard, under windows only handy with wireframe, under linux shaded no problem.
the hypershade, the getbrush tool and all artisan tools (texturepaint, paintfx, paintweights) work very fast compared with speed under windows. the memory usage is if you use kde not really better. with icewm i realized a real advantage of 160 mb up to 210 mb (depending on settings).

Kinda off-topic but: if you own a windows version are you entitled to a linux/OSX/IRIX cd or you have to buy another license?

If you want to move your current version over, there is a fee. It used to be $1000, but it might be less now that maya is only 2k.
