great painting, I`m a huge fan of your work
I think the composition would be even stronger when you crop the picture on the right side so the main figure comes more into focus
anyway, beautiful work

a very strong composition. good balance of colors with the characters (like the reds of the flying clothes versus the greens of the gown). great dynamics with the characters, layout, and costumes. love how you have parts of the woman's outfit flying around, very well done. the bloody dribble coming from the hems of her gown is a nice touch.
I might not entirely see how it fits into bloody "rain", but it's not a problem here. A very well composed and rendered piece. you carried your style throughout so that there's no weak points that carrying your eye off the page or distract from the main subjects. can't wait to see the rest of your work when you're ready. great job.

Beautiful piece! I don't agree that there's anything wrong with the rendering of the blood (it is stylized to match the flying cloak), nor would I crop the art in any way. This painting has a classical composition and it works flawlessly. The rendering, colors, everything works!
When I see a piece this good, the first thing I do is make it my desktop wallpaper, so I can look at it every time I sit down at my computer, and get to know it. Most art only lasts a couple of days before I move on to another, but this one is going to keep me interested for weeks! Admittedly, this is partly due to the fact that I still can't figure out what's going on in the scene... but I still love it!

This is a striking piece, but I couldn't help noticing some of the details look *very* similar to Donato's work, in particular the armor on the men. It also seems to me that upon close inspection, the armor is rendered differently on the different characters, I would even go as far as to say that you may have pasted a few parts in there and painted over them.

I looked at the sites you provided that compare this painting's armor to one from Donato (who's artwork I'm familiar with and is my favorite of the Magic card illustrators. I also met him during ComicCon the previous year). I did NOT find any of Donato's armor on the men of Wei Chen's painting. The armor was not the same in either armor type, style, position, or rendering. One breastplate was of a similar design, but was in a different position, lighting, style, and had more armor with it than the one in Donato's piece.
I must suggest that you be careful with such a statement, because I did check on your claim, and I'm not sure where you got the idea (maybe a little, but not nearly enough to go beyond coincidence). For instance, Wei Chen's characters are mostly facing forward in a relaxed fashion, and the painting you provide from Donato has action-oriented characters sort of rushing to the right of the painting (with one or two exceptions that still don't fit the mold of the Chen's painting). Therefore, there can be no 'pasted' reference for the armor.
Also, Wei Chen added more armor on the arms and shoulders to the characters, and Donato's painting has mostly bare-armed or cloth-based costume on the arms and shoulders of his soldiers. Even the style of the armor is different. Donato's resembles a more Renaissance type style and feel to it, where Wei Chen's carries that more digital, color saturated, defined style. I am sorry, but I don't feel that your critique bears adequate proof for such a claim. The armor could've been referenced from many sources, but modified to fit the artist's desire for the design of the piece. This would be a common practice with many artists, anyway.

I put a couple of direct comparison images together to show what I mean.
In my opinion this helmet has been copied, pasted and changed a bit.
http://jamesryman.com/images/comparisons/comparison%201.jpg
This plate armor looks to have had the same treatment to me too, especially when you compare the rendering to the armor by Wei Chen on the far right. The detail and approach look completely different.
http://jamesryman.com/images/comparisons/comparison%202.jpg
Like I originally said, Wei Chen does some terrific work, but this kind of thing does nothing for the art or the artist and brings down an otherwise very nice piece of work.

a helmet and shoulder guard. I figured you were referring to the plate armor, which is the most notable of the piece. Not sure about that third image in the second example (what are you comparing there?)
linainverse23
05-08-2009, 03:59 PM
Alright. I will concede that the helmet and shoulder armor shown below look incredibly similar to the point of appearing copied and re-rendered. I don't agree as much with the plate armor (I feel that it's suitably different or changed enough. I simply couldn't find teh same effect with the breast plates). You did defend your point well in the this sense, though. Just be very specific next time, I was looking for something totally different when you pointed it out the first time.

The third image in the second example is a section of Wei Chen's rendering of armor. I included it to show the very stark difference between how it was rendered and how the shoulder armor is rendered in the first 2 images of the second example.
I'm not sure what you mean about not agreeing with the other stuff you mention. In my original post all I said was 'some of the details look *very* similar to Donato's work, in particular the armor on the men'. I didn't mention anything specific deliberately, I was inviting people to take a closer look for themselves. Which you said you did. And then you basically called me a liar.
I appreciate that you like this artists work, but you jumped in to their defence without thoroughly checking the works.
I don't enjoy doing this kind of thing, at all. But I happen to think it's very important, for many reasons, to call it out when it happens.

Alright, then allow me to eat a piece of humble pie. I was wrong. I do apologize for jumping on you when my preliminary search didn't match what I thought I read on your post. I jumped to conclusions and berated you for it. That was wrong of me. (In case you're wondering, there's no sarcasism or mocking here. No emotions in a text post).
Your claim is justified, and I do not berate you for making the claim. I have no qualms stating when someone thinks an idea or image was copied or stolen. I have seen a few examples of it before from past experiences. You, of course, do have every right (and are right to do so) to post concerns regarding these issues.
My response before, when it turned out you were right, could be seen as disregard for a true and genuine claim. I would not want this to mean that I support copying or refute claims of it. You were justified in your claim, and it was good of you to defend it, because now I see otherwise. If we were face-to-face I'd hold out my hand in hopes you'd accept my apology. I'm sorry.

Very good. I like the subject matter. I'm really interested in things like Xena Warrior Princess and the Legendary Journey's of Hercules. This illustation fits perfectly into the theme of that subject matter. Colors are very lively and fit well in the composition to add a sense of style to the characters involved in the theme here.
Good compo and very nice dynamic.
good colors too

I like at most the main womans figure including her pose, concentrated face expression, her dress with using red colurs. Also great is the mysterious green tree and the red flowing parts of stuff.
