"The world's population is getting older. Life expectancy has risen due to good nutrition and medicine, and the old Grim Reaper just isn't pulling his weight!

Enter Mortimus Maximus, the Uber Death - This guy worked the titanic - 1500 souls harvested in under two hours. That's dedication for you!! Armed with a mighty scythe, charge through the supermarkets and bingo halls on your Chariot of Doom, ridding the world of the over 70's once and for all!"

Okay, so this is shaping up to be more cover-art than cut-scene stuff, but I wasn't sure how to approach a 2D painting 'cinematically'. This gets across the iconic main character (Mortimus Maximus) and his cool vehicle.

I only started this on monday night, so bear with me. Three steps to go: shading & detail, lighting & shadows, then the background and title if I've got time. I've got most of the shading and detail painted. I doubt I'll get this finished completely by the deadline - but I'll give it a shot.

I'll include some scans of pencil sketches to show the process a bit.

Nice style man. Very clean. I like the crispness of the image.

Thanks Gamoron.

I've finished the shading and detail on the bottom half of his vehicle. Lighting and shadows next.

After

I ditched the blades on the wheels. Added too much bulk to the vehicle and made it look less 'airborne'.

Very cool!
You did a great job transforming the line work to the colored version.

I'm sad to see the wheel blades go. Maybe you can put some spikes on the bottom of his sandals?

He he, great suggestion Jake. I tried spikes on the bottom of the sandals, but they looked pretty odd - but without them the soles looked very plain compared to the rest of the picture, so I put a grip pattern on the bottom and spikes on the straps.

I think it's a huge improvement!

Okay, I got the background in - I'm pushed for time, plus a plain backdrop pops him out in the foreground more, I think.

There's a space left at the bottom for a title (coming soon). Still a little more shading to do all over (deep shadows).

Finished it, pretty much. Just need to do the title. Not sure which background to use though - purple or green.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm.......tough choice. I guess thematically I'd go with the green. The green and orange, to me, suggest blood and decay--more fitting with the whole mayhem theme. I also think the green pushes the character out a bit more. But they both work.

Cheers Jake:thumbsup:

I went with the Green, and here's the finished character:

On the original, I left enough space for a title - for a kind of mock-up game cover, but it doesn't look like I'll have time before the deadline!

Here's a closer detail shot, if anyone's interested:

Thanks again to everyone who pitched in - not bad for 4-5 days work!

I uploaded a slightly bigger version on CGchallenge.com: http://www.cgchallenge.com/challenge_view.php?challenge_id=35

Thanks Jake, though I'm not holding my breath! My post doesn't seem to have inspired many comments either negative or positive, which I don't take as a good sign!!:hmm:

Cheers Pigwater:beer:

I just took a look at your thread - your character could be the arch-villain of mine (or vice versa!!)

Bitter, twisted pensioners pitted against the angel of Death - I'd buy that game!!!

Ya,try not to take quietness too personally.Sheesh,no one posted anything on my little attempt to try and compete with masters.
Yours looked good from the start, cool idea too.

I think, in terms of response, a lot of it has to do with name recognition. Most of my stuff has sunk like a stone into obscurity. You just have to keep plugging away at it.

I don't know dude... I've been posting my entry here all month and you've gotten almost as many views and replies as me in just a few days. Same for the other challenges. Some people getting as many as 40000 views when all I was got was a few hundred. I'm just worried that people won't even bother to look at the entries full size before voting.

You got a point there, zenzmurfy. Jakes right tho - I think people just look at names they recognise.

From the forum, zenzmurfy. There are a few names that stand out amongst the crowd, either because they post lots of quality work, or because they talk a lot!!!:D
only1yeti: Cheers, man. Much appreciated!
