DESCRIPTION: Nicola Tesla was hugely under appreciated genius of his time and after reading through some of his quotes this story basically unfolded itself. Two weeks start to finish (part time) using Maya, After Effects and Photoshop.
The dialogue is a series of Tesla quotes and the voice over was taken from several old Serbian war documentaries which had no subtitles, so I have no clue whats really being said there (it would be interesting to know if anyone out there can translate).

I have a tendency to get caught up in minor aspects of a shot which are not even visible and end wasting time over irrelevant details. For this challenge my only goal was to do the opposite; complete one shot per day (regardless of the quality and urge I have to go back and tweak it), and cut together a mildly entertaining but COMPLETE short.

DESCRIPTION:
Background story: The video shows a Tesla - Transportation system, which was invented during the second world war, but never got revealed.

The background plate was shot with a Canon HF-100 in 1080p. All 3D elements done in 3Ds Max, Syntheyes used for tracking and Fusion for all the compositing and effect work.

DESCRIPTION:

A condensed version of an iconic sequence from the classic silent film Metropolis (1927, Dir. Fritz Lang). Lots of fringey science ideas based on electricity and early 20th century tech were evident in the film, and made it a good parallel to the Tesla challenge.

The goal wasn't to make hyper-realistic effects, it was to match the tone and style of the original film (and its effects) while allowing myself room for personal expression (high key lighting, modestly updated effects, stylized color palette reminiscent of movie posters of the era).

Maya used for set modeling and rendering with mental ray, ZBrush used for character modeling and texture work, Crazybump used for normal and spec maps of machinery, After Effects used for compositing, with a couple retiming tweaks done using Motion's optical flow.

DESCRIPTION: Someone has created a homemade Tesla coil to do teleportation experiments with. He or she found an abandon warehouse to use and is not concerned with cleaning it up.

We wanted to have more interaction with the scene but we underestimated how quickly the time goes by. I changed my mind 4-5 times about how I was going to do the electricity and never ended up getting what I wanted. I certainly learned a lot about the importance of planning.

Done in Max with splines and particles for the electricity. Rendered with Vray and comped in After Effects.
