Hi
I am glad to post here my Master Thesis graduation film. It was done at Arts et Technologies de l'Image, université paris 8 during my last year at faculty. It takes one more year to end up with an original soundtrack composed by Mathieu Alvado and interpreted by a symphonic orchestra at CNSM de Paris.

All CG made with Maya 7.0 and real Flow. After Effects and wondefull plugs for compositing. If you are interested a little makof is avaible.

I hope you will enjoy our work :)

Music by Mathieu Alvado, interpreted by the Star Pop Orchestra at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
Contractor : Christophe Elliot.
Editing and mixing by Thibaut Maillart, Etienne Graindorge.
Sound recording by Etienne Oury, Benoit Navarret, Thibaut Maillart, Etienne Graindorge.

Hi,

thanks for the compliments on the movie and particulary the ones on the music I've composed. It's a great joy knowing that our work is so well received by such experienced people as you guys. I prefer that Mathieu answer your questions on the meaning of the movie, but if you have any question or commentary on the soundtrack, I'ld be very happy to answer it.

Hello Mathieu-gg,

Great piece here.
I once heard about a theory that's speak about the intricately link between picture and music.
Your work here seems to prove it !

You can be proud of your work .

I think we don't need to find a sense in it, but only emotion .

Congrats  5*

Very rarely a short has given me emotions like this one. The music is wonderful, the photography is awesome, the direction is amazing. The CG is more than tremendous.
You know something.

Congratulations.

It's a great state of art. Perfect concept, catching the feeling of semiology aspects. Sense of abstraction. Combine perfectly images and music. Touch of inspiration. By the way, the "Paris short cuts" is very poetic piece too! The world need some directors like you. With sense of estethic and passion for the art.

Keep the Line. Cheers

wow cool stuff..

technically its great to look at.. but its missing cohesion and a story line..
even abstract works can tell a story.. it leaves me feeling that it was just a random
set of 3d works edited together..excellently produced 3d works,

but still i think with some solid narrative it could be amazing..

thanks

Captivating visuals and music.
Not thinking of the experimental tag I thought it would be something with that steel orb exploring various phenomenon, but I dont know how it could end so I concur with the experimental approach. :)

Its psychedelic in a cg "2001 Space Odyssey" kind of way.

This is just EPIC

amazing work mathew , it reminds me of that movie Baraka

your camera movements are impressive as your attention for detail.

the water close ups where u see the water flowing is outstanding , and the grass shot is very emotive.

Gives the feeling of that something is going to happen.

great feeling TY

Thanks again for all these kind words. I'm very proud that Mathieu asked me to compose the score of Steel Life. It was a hard task for me cause of the visual beauty of the film and the importance he gaves to the music : composing something which wouldn't be as good as what the film needed petrified me. And during all this process (composing the first sketchs, realising the mock up, organizing the session...) , Mathieu was very supportive and understanding. I'll never thank him enough for that !

Recording the music with the orchestra was a great joy, and Mathieu took some superb shots of this recording session ! The musicians and the sound engineers were wonderful cause they spent so much time for free on this project. It was just incredible for Mathieu and me.

Working on Steel Life was a fantastic journey and your compliments are a nice reward.

Hi Mathieu, hi everyone..

After reading through 6 pages of "awesome" I kind of feel its my duty to add a different point to this conversation.

It is a TD-reel with well produced sound. Thats all it is..there is no directing and no opinion, no soul..there is no abstraction, there is nothing...it's a reel. Using all the gadgets out there doesn't make a film.

Well, maybe it's not a film. But most recently, whilst I was surfing the internet, I stumbled over a fairly new concept, in comparison to the rather old one of film: I think it was called "art"?
They said that this art-thingy was a "process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions." Furthermore they said, that "[t]he most common usage of the word 'art', [...] is understood to denote skill used to produce an aesthetic result."[link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art). Now, I haven't thought this concept all the way through, but we might be up to something here. Don't you think?

@ Mathieu, both of you:
I think you did a really great job on that short! The timing of the imagery and the music was perfect. And by combining both, the visual and the acoustical impressions, you really achieved that "WOW" effect.
Can't wait to see more colabs from the two of you. :)

Cheers!

tonypolygoni

oh yes..i totally forgot..art...of course.
First of all, art is relative. Joseph Beuys puts some butter in a corner and maybe just maybe if some ppl with influence call it art, all the lemmings are willing to pay a lot of money for it. Or kneel down in front of the artist and praise him. And that is the point. I think art is so relative..you can't really have a discussion about it. So let's stick to the facts.

This is not art. It is a reel. How do the shots appeal to you emotionally? Do you cry when you see Real Flow simulations? Do you get goose bumps when somebody uses a downloadable FG/Radiosity test model of a building for one of his "so totally meaningful shots"?..Maya fluids are so unbelievablely unique they let you think about the meaning of life and planting a tree? The unbelievablely tricky and totally new concept of something running forward...and then, holy crap....backwards again....blows your mind? Oh my god...there is a thing coming down to the earth, and suddenly there is some stuff flowing into a glass tube, and then there is the empire state building with tentacles...of course this is totally connected to the abstract energy explosion..and yes, everybody thought that the metal shaded flower fills up the gaps and tells you...hoho..what the real deal is.

No, there is art out there but this is not it. I appreciate this piece for its technical value. Its very well made. Props to them and the effort they put in it..Must have taken a long time. But please please don't say this is art..it would make me gag...

oh and thanks for the wikipedia definition of art....that's the spirit!

Please tonypolygoni, show us your reel, pleaaase!!!

@ tony, temper, temper! Interestingly, right after complaining about "ppl with influence" telling everybody what to call art you posited your own self as an authority on what art is. What a way to shoot yourself in the foot.

Then you say "art is relative" and after that you're adamant that this isn't art...

And on top of all you want to stick to the facts but all you spew is sarcasm...

You must be some kind of artist yourself.

I can agree that there is a lot of "awesome, dude" going on on these boards and that this work of ART leaves something to be desired (but it's down to my own taste), but yes, realflow, as commonplace as it nowadays is, CAN sometimes "blow your mind". And a person who can achieve that, whatever the means, should be rightfully called an artist.

Amazing!! enjoyment each second the visual effects that you make, the texture of the skyscraper was the unique thing that needs improvements, but is valid by being a test

I have one technical question. I've watched your making of on vimeo and I'm still not sure how did you do those wonderful shiny strokes (about 2:55 of making of). Is this particleflow with texture? Or something else? During 4 last days I'm trying to create something similar to this, and I'm jumping from Afterburn, FumeFx, RealFlow and regular pflow and I can't achieve that amazing results as yours....

nope. your response is just to pathetic.

@disco-Dave: You've got a good point about me saying 'art is relative' and then dictating what art is and what not. The thing is, this is just my personal view, so if you re up to analyzing what I said and try to shoot back....you missed the topic because you didn't respond to what I said, you just responded to how I said it. And for the sarcasm, I didn't really start it, take a look at the 'wiz4rd' response...now thats what I call some good old fashioned sarcasm... so anyways, I sticked to the facts, actually pretty precisely, and this thing is still a reel. Rock n Roll!
