View Full Version : Looping Walk Cycle Problem

1. I have a walk motion and when playing on the spot (in-place) the transition between the first and last frame is perfectly smooth and works fine, however when I open it in story mode and loop it there it doesn't, the end pose is different to the start pose which shouldn't be the case, it seems that when it is imported through story mode it for some reason changes the animation, does anybody know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

2. Also, does anybody know if it's possible to edit the movement of a character after motions have been combined in story mode? Whenever I've tried to keyframe movement (on any layers) the keys don't appear in the timeline and they aren't stored so the movement doesn't change (yes, autokey is on). Is there something else I need to do to before keyframing the effectors of the control rig to enable me to edit the motion?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

some times the clip in story will add a frame of its own interpolation and cause the loop to break. just double check that and adjust the in/out as needed.

After you combine the clips. .just make sure you have not made the clip read only if you created a new clip and had it saved out to a file.

I don't think it's that it's added a frame, the entire animation seems different, for example I fixed the foot/floor contacts but when in story mode they're not flat when in contact with the floor and they pass through it. In fact, I just checked the unprocessed file where I've not altered the motion by keyframing and the motion in story mode looks almost identical to the original motion capture data, is there a reason why it might not be reading the edited data/keys? Could it be just reading from the base layer maybe? If so why and is there a way to make it read all or to flatten the layers or something?

After you combine the clips. .just make sure you have not made the clip read only if you created a new clip and had it saved out to a file.

How do you make a clip read only or not? Would it be the file or within Motionbuilder?

Apologies if any of these questions are basic, I'm not too familiar with MotionBuilder yet.

I often see issues and strange things occur when using the story editor.

What helps a great deal is to simply plot to the skeleton, and have it use skeleton data in the story editor, rather than the control rig.

Even then, sometimes it introduces some wierdness at the end of the loop - though not nearly as often, or as bad as if had been on the control rig. What I do when the loop doesn't quite work properly, is to simply plot the looped story data back to the original scene, plot it back to control rig, then manually paste the pose to the end - and just put a zero key about 20frames before the end, so it can blend into the pose I need it to be. This work 99% of the time.

Also, I've noticed that when plotting data from the story back to the original scene, it often plots strange data to the control rig - so make sure that after you leave story mode that you replot to control rig manually - to make sure it matches up with the skeleton data. Just remember to try and work with skeleton data in the story editor whenever possible, and it'll really help out.

Thanks everyone for the help, the problem has been fixed now. Well it wasn't exactly fixed, I ended up having to edit on top of the story mode data which isn't what I really wanted to do but oh well.
