...just beginning to box model in Maya. Can you select polygon faces and use the bevel tool or is beveling limited to polygon edges (and/or the entire object)? Thanks!!

Right, you can bevel an edge or an object using the Bevel tool. But you can bevel a face using the Extrude tool (extrude and scale in) – often with better results than beveling the edges.
