Hello cgtalkers.

A picture is worth a thousand word so:

Is it feasible to 'grow' a flattened image (the colored one) in such a manner ? (using a grayscale map for intensity)

With the overlap? not really. For that you will still need to employ some trickery with duplicates. Generally it should be possible, though, by using Colorama, Gradient Wipe, Levels and a few complementary tools...
