hey everyone,

I was wondering if someone would be willing to look at my maya file and see if I am on course to finishing this golf swing animation. I am trying to learn as I go so I don't know if I am way off or close to being there.

Everything is the exact same speed, you want to make your timing an interesting part in your animation. Play around with different timings (really slow backswing - fast down swing or maybe fast backswing - long pause - fast down swing)

Yes to some timing changes.

Also on your character's backswing it looks like one of the arms/hands it leaving the club and doing something funky, you might want to check that. I don't know the technical details of a golf swing but it certainly looks like a golf swing.

hey guys thanks for taking a look...

I have a lot of confusion since this is my first animation, but I don't really know how to ask what I want to figure out. I modeled this swing after a tiger woods swing and keyed the extremes. I think I messed up because I animated under the stepped setting. When I switched it to flat, it smoothed out how we see. Did I mess up there? should I have started with a flat setting?

next question do I need to add some more keys to fix my problems such as in the hands or is that all in the curves?

I will try to think of how to ask my other questions for now hopefully you could help with these thank you

If this is your first animation I would start with something less complex, like a bouncing ball, keeping things simple at first will make everything less confusing and will help you down the road

yes you are right, I have done other animations such as a ball...but I will go back and get better, and try and figure out a solid workflow

I took a look at your maya file. First thing is that you have way to many frames. There is something like 100 frames between each key pose. Watch Tiger again, it only takes him a couple of seconds to hit a ball. Your poses aren't that bad, its mainly the timing (I did a quick retiming of your poses, see video).

As for your process I usually start in stepped mode as well, but if you find you don't like the way things are looking when you flatten out your keys, go back to stepped and add more inbetweens. The computer is an idiot, you don't want it making decisions for you.

ahh awesome kyle thanks for doing that. I figured I probably should go back in and add some more while tweaking the curves. I will go in and experiment with timing. thanks again I will update later
