View Full Version : free textures
Just wanted to share some free textures with you guys from a site I'm working on.. It's no where near finished, so bear with me on the unfinished parts. Any feedback is welcome.
Also, the textures are located in the "images" section.

I like the design and found some nice textures! Love the signs...
Thanks for the positive feedback! We will be adding to our texture collection constantly so keep checking back.
While I keep developing the site if anyone has any great ideas or feels the need to help, please let me know :)
Thanks!
Dan

I'd love to see more vegetation. Not many free textures for these. Leaves, branches, tufts of grass, bushes, palm trees, etc. Most textures of these are taken in sunlight (bad for texturing).
Thanks for the resource, much appreciated.

We can have new stuff like that up in a week and a half / 2 weeks, are you looking for close up leaves or just basic bunches of foliage?

Well, I'm looking for branches with leaves. I've been taking my own shots lately, finding it difficult to get good shots.
I'm creating trees for real-time 3D use, so the branches will be alpha-masked onto simple 3d shells, which are then lined up with the tree trunk. Something like this:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59084
The hard part of the photo-end is in getting a good bkg for the leaves/branches, so I can pull a decent mask. Shooting against the sky is problematic, since the brightness causes it to bleed into the leaves. But under-exposing creates a bad color-range for the leaves.
Best way I've found is to cut a branch off the tree, then suspend it over (or lay it out on top of) a tarp or other differently-colored surface. But that's a pain.
Another problem is getting decent bump and specular maps. Building the leaves/branches out of geometry makes that much easier, but then that's a lot of work too.
I also have the geographic problem of not having access to certain species like date palms or conifers.
Anyhow, just sharing some thoughts here. I wouldn't expect someone to go to all that effort for content on a free site. But if you want to it would certainly be appreciated!

Well it's kinda funny cause I've been avoiding shooting fooliage for the exact reasons you're having difficulties.
I'm not sure how I would even go about shooting a branch and be able to pull decent bump and spec off of the same shot... I'll give it some thought, but plants are certainly something I'd like to add more of to the library.
I'm glad you like the free library, it should grow quite a bit in the next week with a bunch of textures, including some that have been already prepped for different things...
We don't mind giving them away for now, it would only become a question of "totally free" when our bandwidth gets too high.. but for now, Plunder and enjoy!!
