Hi there, guess what. Yup i need help:annoyed:

Heres the deal, I'm using 3dsmax5 and i wanted to do a character that has a "skirt" more like a sorong (heck, i dont know what its called), anyway i was just wondering how cloth is animated for games(like all those dudes with trench coats)? I know that these days they write their own cloth sim stuff but other than that whats the prefered way? bones? reactor?keyframe verts? or just is it just clever enveloping in characterstudio? Any hints would be real usefull ro links to websites with any tips as to how things are done in the industry.

So to recap, i was wondering how cloth is animated for the use in a game.

Pheeeeeew, well that was harder than i thought it would be but its a simple thing really, maybe i should work on my comunnication skills.

 (sorry too tempted to use that smiley)

I'm guessing it's just an editable mesh or poly and they animate the verticies with keyframes. Or they could use reactor which has a pretty good cloth simulator in it.

We use bones for our cloth animations, but that's because our current engine doesn't support softbody solutions. Havok (Reactor's engine) is a fine little tool for games that has decent cloth simulation.
