Hello guys,

im currently playing with a lowpoly character who's clothes are mostly just textures (excluding simple shoulderpads, sleeves, which are 3d but dont deform). What i am trying to figure out lately is what would be the most efficient way of attaching all clothes (jacket, pants, boots etc, those i have made as separate 3d objects already) as 3d meshes and have them deform the same way as the rigged character model when animating around and eventually being able to even animate the character undressing or interacting with the clothes, or animating the clothes on the character without the use of dynamics.

So the most important questions are:

- What technique to use to have 3D mesh clothes (jacket, pants, boots etc.) attached to a character deform the same way as the character does when animated. Can it be done with some deformers ? or do i have to bind the clothes' mesh to the chars joints?

- What technique to use when i want the character to interact with its clothes (unzip, grab something in its inner pocket for example) or take jacket off and throw it on the floor.

- Do i rig those clothes somehow, or would it be easier to do it in nCloth or use some dynamics? nCloth results seem to be bit random to me, not too precisely controllable when it comes to translation and need loads of tuning but i managed to get ok results there. I will gladly work on it that way if i hear that it IS the way to go.

Its a lowpoly char yes but i still want the mentioned things to look kind of realistic so im willing to get deep into ncloth / dynamics to get it done if thats the way to do it. Basicly i dont want a whole tutorial from you guys here, just the basic workflow or techniques and tools which would be the best to use to get mentioned goals done.

Thanks alot if you decide to help!

Im using lightwave but it should be the same for all 3d animation programs.
one technique is to have two separate scenes. one where the clothes are deformed by the characters bones and another scene where the clothes are cloth simulated.

"What technique to use to have 3D mesh clothes (jacket, pants, boots etc.) attached to a character deform the same way as the character does when animated"

Parent the clothes (if they're in a separate layer) to the body. if you have weight maps applied then the weights need to have the same properties as the charater and share the same bones.

to interact with the clothes have bones applied to the clothes in parts you want to interact with. for example for a shirt pocket have a weight map that is only applied to the shirt pocket and a bone that deforms it. put the base of the bone at the bottom of the shirt pocket and have the highest weight value at the top of the shirt. this way you can rotate the pocket out ot make it open and close.

you could use a bone chain for stuff like a zipper.

im not familiar with n cloth but working with bones is my best answer.
