View Full Version : why does maya have weird lines for viewing normals?
Streamlight 07-09-2003, 07:42 PM Hey, when I poly model for some reason I get a lot of reversed normals... My problem is when I check my normals allll of these lines are shown making it impossible to see which way the normals are facing ... moreso around the nose area... is there any option to see normals in a different way? wouldnt it be easier to show the normal direction in a different way then all of those lines ?

The normals direction can be shown Many different ways. The thing you are doing is selecting the entire object and then telling Maya to show the normals. What you want to do is to select only a few faces and do the show normals. Or if you would like to see which ones are flipped, you can just turn off two-sided lighting. It's under the viewport window, lighting.

Maybe a graphics card problem. It append frequently when your card isn't in the A|W tested list... For example I can't extrude in shaded mode (I can only in wireframe).
If your card is a good one, you can display the normals differently by setting their size in the preferences... Maybe works well

in the viewport menubar
Shading/Backface Culling
might be what you are looking for.
you can also change the length of the normal lines by setting values
(main menubar) Display/Custom Polygon Display (click the square to see the options)
