I just recently saw tThe Animatrix about 150 times and was particularly bedazzled by the animation in the short "Beyond" by Japanese animation artist and director Kouji Morimoto. For those of you who haven't seen it, change that.

After watching it I was inspired to make an short animated film of mine own in a similar style. The reason for this was I was amazed at the incredible talent and ability Morimoto displayed in manipulating 2 dimensional backgrounds to create 3d looking environments. If you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about.

In some instances Morimoto has created, most likely, rough 3d boxes and planes and textured them with 2d background drawings and adding camera shakes and what not. However in some instances it seems he just blends background cells together seemingly flawlessly and completely changes the dynamic of the shot to make you feel that this cartoon world really has a great deal of depth to it. The techniques of image manipulation are really incredible and I want to know how in the heck they did some of those shots.

I watched the making of the film and got little from it that I was hoping for. (It basically talks about the ideas for the film, inspiration and stuff about the director) but it doesn't go into great detail about how his style is achieved. After hours of sitting in front of the TV pausing, rewinding and playing things back in “slow-mo,” I've come to a conclusion. While I can figure out some things, if anyone knows of any websites, people, places or things that could help me to better understand this animation style that would be awesome. Anything you know is helpful, thanks!
