Are there any decent books about modeling in maya? I saw one for 3dsm, and was wondering if there was anything like it out there.

Something preferably for a beginner. And yes, I have seen the tutorials that come with the program.

a fundimentals book is the best book you can possibly get if your trying to learn the basics. I can't stress that enough. It's a really great book that gives really detailed explinations and movies of how to do all the tutorials in the book... hmm im starting to sound like an advertisment... i dont mean too.l

I'll second that. Maya fundamentals books are probably the best way to get your feet wet, but that's after you do all the tutorials in your help menu. There is also a great book called Maya 2 Character animation that is really good. It uses Nurbs throughout I think. All techniques are still current even though it was written for Maya 2. Many people seem to think modeling in Poly's is easier, and they may be right, but I say if you can model well in Nurbs you can model anything.

Alias wavefronts books are also extremely good books, but I don't recall them having anything modeling specific. [NOTE] Maya Fundamentals is not modeling specific either, but it does take you through many techniques you'll need to know, and trough the interface.

not a good book, get the 4.5 regular book, it will teach you more and better.

Hey,

I would definitely also recommend Maya 4.5 savvy. It's really just the newer edition of Mastering Maya. It covers all area's of Maya and we are currently using it as the major course book at the University I work for.

I also hear that this book called, Maya Character Animation is amazing. It's the one with the sax player on the cover. It has a good reputation among everyone ive talked to about books. Though, it is much more advanced then the fundimental books. I personally want to get that modeling and animating human characters book. It looks great but its not program specific so Im not sure yet. :)
