View Full Version : AO seems - only from a certain distance.
JaredTaylor 03-26-2009, 06:43 AM Hey guys, I've got a problem with using AO maps in maya, when I'm zoomed in there are no problems, but if I zoom out there is a seam that I don't think should exist on my model's legs. This is only during render time, doesn't happen with high or low quality mode in the viewport at all.

Im not seeing any contrast or contact shadows from the AO .Have you added way to much brightness to your AO

It is too bright, yes, take a look at the arm pits f. ex - it's there.
Main point is look at the leg/hip joining area on the pants, the black line going around. Only happens from a certain distance.

So what have you discounted problem wise after de bugging your scene ?

I've tried isolating everything, it's definitely the occlusion map if that's what you are asking..

I guess this is something related to filtering out black texels on the AO texture... I don't exactly know how AO maps work with maya, but this is a problem that is rather common.
This problem generally occurs at UV boundaries when zooming out, because the texture filtering might read texels that were not computed in the AO map, or might look up in mipmaps that were not correctly generated.
Check out for something like 'seam filling' when generating the AO map and increase this value. Or you might check your UVs and move seams were they are most likely not to disturb the rendering too much...
Eventually, reduce the texture filtering to a lower value so the texture lookup won't sample black texels (but beware of texture aliasing, which should not be an actual problem with AO maps, generally too smooth too alias.)
Hope it helps!

Can you post just the occlusion pass please so we can see what you are talking about?
edit: try increasing your max distance

Hi guys,
Ben2bomb - I actually decreased the default value the program I used to generate had set to seam overfill or whatever it's called - that could very well be it, I'll check it out.
