View Full Version : Wacom Intuos 4
andare 03-25-2009, 02:51 PM Hi.
The new Intuos 4 is out, at least in Europe.
I'm thinking about getting one.
I would like to know if it's possible to work efficiently with the medium sized one (6x9 in) on a 17" screen and up to 24" (i might get an iMac next year)
or should I just go for the large one (13x8 inches)?
i don't really mind spending 100 euros more if it means not getting stuck with a tablet that's too small to be usable.
Any help from current users is appreciated.

6x9 is a bigger working area than it sounds. It's the perfect size for me, and I use a 24" screen. I like this size because I can use the tablet both on the desk and sitting on my lap. Personally, the large size would be pretty cumbersome and require more sweeping arm movement which I wouldn't care for. Get the smaller one. If you do feel cramped for space, these tablets hold their value well so reselling one would be pretty easy.

Thanks! That's exactly what I wanted to hear.

@ andare:
Yes that's a good choice for personal use.
Btw,Who told you Wacom is a German company (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=5766135#post5766135)?!
It's Japanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacom).

i got misled by the European wacom website that reads "Wacom GmbH" (ltd. in german)
japanese or not I still don't like that fact that Americans get a discount on Adobe CS4 and we Europeans do not. It's a round world last time I checked

That's not only for Wacom but for every product !!
Everything is much cheaper in US than EU,
(If I am right US prices are cheaper than China also.)
If something is 400 USD in US then it's 400 to 450 Euro or sometimes even more in Europe.
But that's how it is! I simply don't look at the US price now a days.
Btw, my Polish friend told me that in Poland everything is cheaper compared to rest of EU.
You might get a better deal from some local store than just buying it from the Wacom Europe site.
Intuos 4 is just launched... so if you wait for some time or go for Intuos 3, you might get a much better deal.

I've been scanning info but still have not come across (including at Corel's site) whether Intuos3 pens can be used on the new tablet. My impression is probably not (!) I have a few Intuos 3 pens including the Art pen; that I have to buy new pens again is not in the budget right now.

Hopefully it will.
Wacom products has generally been quite backward compatible.

saiko,
I'm sorry, but where did you receive this information? That's incorrect. Intuos tablets have never been backwards compatible with previous versions.
In short, the intuos4 uses different technology and therefore intuos3 pens are not compatible.

so besides the sweeping arm movement involved in the large tablet? are there other reasons on if I should get a large or a medium? I'm having problems deciding.

JJ, I was tossing between the large and medium and ended up getting the large (check the dimensions against the Intuos3 tablets, they're different). I'm glad I got the large. It is less cumbersome than the Int3 large (which I have). And what was a nice surprise, how much lighter it is. You'll still be able to make swooping strokes.
Also pleased with the surface; there's "tooth" so that the stylus feels like drawing on paper.
