Hey everyone,

I am in the middle of texturing a creature, and have came to a spot of trouble. :thumbsdow

I started with a detailed subdivision surface, which i then converted to 2 poly-meshes; one high poly, and one low poly.
The problem is that i have started texturing the low-poly mesh and realised that maybe i might not be able to transfer the UV set from it to the high poly mesh.

Please tell me i am wrong, i have tried the polygon>transfer UV Sets, and have tried copying UV's to the other mesh. But nothing.

The dilemma is that its pretty high with detail some places had level 3 vertices from the subD mesh, and when i converted i wanted all the detail.
If i was to texture the high poly mesh, i'd be there for at least the next release of maya.

Any suggestions.

you cannot transfer UvSets to meshes with different polycounts.

Its possible with different point orders(go to highend3d.com)

In you case, it is standard to Uv map the low poly mesh....and when it is converted to highpoly mesh the Uvs will still be there.

SubDs are a bit finicky, so do a search on Cgtalk for Uvmapping Subds to see what u might find.

If do u it in only polys....take the low polymesh and add a smooth node to it. You have only 1 geometry....and upon rendering you just up the smooth node to what u want.

yeh i've tried adding a smooth node, but because the detail was localised on the subD it doesn't remain when i increase interations.

Is UV mapping the subD model any different from UV the poly?

this is getting into territory i dont know much about....so do a search on it. Subds and Uvs are finicky...especially if you have higher level editing...

IF you really need to work with subd heres a suggestion:

work on poly 90% of the time and convert to sub only when needed, ie rendering.

So now you can map with poly tools,

Heres a suggestion if you go from low poly to smoothed poly level up: Get the smooth UV script on highend (maya/mel/poly section) to interpolate the high poly UVS, maya does not interpolate them.

yinako, i think i'll try converting it back, never really crossed my mind to go that way. Cheers.
Also i cant really add a smooth because it gets rid of all my detail....and makes it ..smooth..

Will try the script none the less, doesn't hurt to try. Thanks

yinako,
maya 5.0 finally does smooth the UVs :-)

i converted the low poly version back to subD and apart from some areas it turned pretty well. So i think i'll stick with that.

Thanks guys.
