View Full Version : Advice on animating a car side view

Hi folks. I want to do an animation, probably in maya, maybe max, that will be basically a side view looking slightly down on a moving car. The biggest thing I want to convey is that while the camera tracks with the car, this thing is seriously hauling ass. It's not jumping stuff or changing lanes, so it's probably the background that will provide the real sense of speed, but maybe there are other things I'm not thinking of (I wish I had a good reference to go from, maybe I better start looking).

I'm new to the animation part of this, so I guess I'm asking if anyone can give me their best fast-moving-car-from-the-side-view advise. Like, I'm not totally sure how to have the wheels turn at great speed and look realistic, or what smart people do to make the background depth look right, and most of all convey speed. I bet a lot of guys here have done stuff like this already, so before I get too far in it would nice to get some little input.

I think I'll have a little camera movement to look like it's being tracked by a chase vehicle, make the wheel bounce a little. There are expressions for stuff like this right? As if I know how to use them...oh well, I want to give it a go.

Ok, didn't get too far with that, but I'm still working. Maybe I should be a little specific in my questions.

The thing I'm having trouble with at the moment is motion blurring an animated map. Because it's the side view with the camera tracking with the car, I have an animated texture map applied to the road object that's animated to fake the car's motion. So the car just sits there with it's wheels spinning on top of a static object who's texture map is flying by. Groovy.

The problem is that while the spinning wheels blur nicely (using the maya software renderer), the map object, or the map itself I guess, doesn't seem to have any motion blur and looks a little weird.

Any ideas?
