View Full Version : Can I change the geometry of a rigged character?
JaredTaylor 03-24-2009, 04:58 PM Hi, I have a character template for my next project:

I want to rig him like he is, and change his head when I need to for different characters. How do I go about doing this without having to reskin him?
Cheers. I guess I could just save the weighting information and reimport then just do the head. Any advice helps.

Yeah, you could do that. From your screenshot I guess you are using Maya. You can save your rigging info. However the last version I checked (I think it was 7.0 and please do correct me if I am wrong) you would export your info based on your UVs, so any overlapping UVs and/or UV changes might lead to problems.
IŽd think about cutting of his head, remodel it and parent it onto your head bone. You wonŽt see the tiny seam at the neck most of the time.

Yeah I would just cut off the head and switch that.

Using the Comet skin weight import/export tools, you can save weights based on vertex number and/or global position. Definitely comes in handy! I never get through a character rig without using some of the Comet tools.
