Is there any special technique for quickly laying out tiny little veins, say in the eye? Up to now I have been drawing each vein by hand. However I can't seem to create enough randomness or variation of size to make it look convincing. Also could this techinque or brush be used to make the largers superficial veins in the forearm?

There is actually a great way of doing this using paint effects in Maya. If you check out the Gnomon Workshop site they have a free tutorial for creating believable eyes.

The main idea is that you create roots using paint effects using parameters to control how dense you want them etc. Then you render them in an appropriate viewport and use the alpha you get to mask out the veins in Photoshop. Works great!

Good luck!

Try look for Lightning pictures. There are also lightning brushes out there for Photoshop.

Can you have the lighting brushes change randomly in photoshop?
