View Full Version : critiques, please :)
Quentina 03-24-2009, 01:26 PM Trying to self study in computer graphic field, and I found that drawing is a very basic requirement (I think). So, I started to make one last week(or 3). Its my 1st drawing done in photoshop+using a mouse. I can't get right with the skin tone :(

And this is the original photo:

I know it looks "weird" after comparing with the original photo, but I can't figure it out, so ..... posting it here to get some ideals...:arteest:

Hello :),
Things I noticed:
•The hair is definitely a different color. While his is blackish with grey/blue highlights, the hair you've drawn is grey with random brown tips.
•You've drawn his nose a little too thin
•Because his nose is too thin, his eyes are too close together
•Because his eyes are too close together, the mouth is too small
•You have the top of his head leaning too far to the viewer's left
•The base of his jaw on the viewer's left does not stick out far enough
•You need to pull the shoulder on the viewer's left up and back and shirt the front of his shirt and tie to the left to give him the appearance of a chest
•The tie is also black not blue :)
I'm not an expert on skin tones or painting in general, but from what I've learned, you need an established background of some color other than white and from that background you should draw colors to mix into the skin tone. Also you should try experimenting with "abnormal" colors to the skin to make it more realistic. If you pay attention, skin isn't just a peachy color. Some parts have more red and others such as below the eye has colors such as purples and blues and greens. Try to not shadows and highlights that are just vaired values of the same color. All these things should help improve it. I'm sorry I don't have any specifics concerning that for this piece.
I'd like to add that you've captured his likeness very well despite a couple issues.
Keep it up :)
Hi,
I think for the first attempt and with a mouse this is very good. you show some talent.
but If you want to get involved seriously with design you need to a acquire a tablet. that's a must.
And for the paiting I think it's good for you to analyze the image into basic 3 levels of grays before starting paiting it. So use cutout filter in photoshop. collapse the image into basic colors and grays. observe the analyzed image very carefully. then try to paint a copy of the analyzed image with more grays. 4 or more.....
This exercise will give you the sensitivity to variation of greyscale values.
You can use this technique with this image to paint fine skin tones.

The most obvious difference to me is the levels. It's a really easy fix too - just a few minutes fiddling with the curves in photoshop should get your dark colors back down where they belong.
Always keep saved states of your work and check back frequently so you can be sure the changes you make are actually making it better not worse!!;)

Hii there! thank you so much for you critiques, since its not easy for me to figure out those problems/mistake by my own ;)
mikkilette,
its not a problem eventhough you (maybe not) expertise in skin tone, as you've seen I got lot of problems (not only skin tone), so any critiques are welcomed~ ;)
GZ,
I got my tablet (beginner tablet, wacom bamboo one) a week ago *LOL* and have been familiarizing with it since then.
I will try on the technique! :D
ArrexBandit,
thanks for your quick tip!! :D
will post the latest corrected image soon (or maybe not so soon) :p
That sounds great. I'm sure you'll draw much better with a tablet. :)
