I really need a quick advice as in topic above. Should I purchase it (USD300) or opt for a new pc/workstation?

My work mostly on print publishing design, photography, graphic design and sometimes 3D.

HP Reference (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11975_div/11975_div.html)
Here is the quick spec for the workstation:
Two 64-bit Intel® Xeon™ processor(s) with Hyper-Threading Technology at 3.6 GHz with
1 MB L2 cache, support 800 MHz Front Side Bus

Intel E7525 (supports 800 MHz Front Side Bus)
2 GB of Registered ECC DDR2 400 MHz SDRAM - can upgrade later
Integrated dual channel SATA 1.5 Gb/s controller with RAID 0 or 1
NVIDIA Quadro FX 540 (PCIe) - can upgrade later
Integrated Broadcom 5751 Gigabit LAN with PCIe interface
500 watts

Thanks,
Zach.

While that machine certainly is capable enough (I have a similar spec at home but not in use any longer) it will run hot and loud, mine is loud enough that I can't work on it for any length of time any longer. It will be slower than a low spec i7 based machine. Personally I'd go for a low spec new pc which would leave much more scope for upgrading at a later date.

Don't buy it. Go for a newer machine, even if its a lower end setup that's new. Cheers!

The reason I am interested with the unit, because I am planning to use it for short term 5 - 6 months as a backup workstation.

How about the performance compare with today's dual core system?

Thanks,
Zach.

On par with a 2.5-3.0 GHz dual core processor today, maybe a little slower. Also the memory will be more expensive for the older workstation (uses FBDIMM). For the $500-600 range you could get a quad core with 8GB of memory. I put together an AMD system on the forums not too long ago like that. Cheers!
