Kind of odd calling it version 3. It's more the current Cryengine being reworked to run on the 360 and PS3. Not unlike other PC Game Engine developers id and Epic; Crytek has found PC games difficult to make a return on.

CryENGINE 3 is the first development platform for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3..

..CryEngine 3, on the other hand, is being optimised and scaled so that it will also run on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 LINK (http://www.incgamers.com/News/15461/Crytek-Showing-Off-CryEngine-3-At-GDC?gr_i_ni)

yeah i don't think it will really mean much for PC users...a bit of optimisation...a couple more lighting and physics effects (branches reacting to stuff) and that's about it.

Kind of odd calling it version 3 ...

Are there any major upgrades (graphics wise) worth calling it version 3? The reacting branches seemed a bit overdone to me and it looks exactly like the PC version to my eyes... But the eyes can deceive :P!

This has nothing to do with the pc engine. Crytek has a seperate console team and this is what they developed for consoles.

oh, well there we go then, this is without a doubt the best stuff I've seen on a console and since it isn't being used for the PC they haven't really wasted any time or money.

I guess its nice for consoles, about the same quality of crysis 1, but larger scale.
hope they have something more interesting in store for the pc community

Personally, I think this is pretty awesome.

That demo might not look as awesome as Crysis (which was CryEngine 2) on max settings on a recent 3k USD highend PC (but that's kinda logical), but the CryEngine is pretty awesome to work with.

The only reason why it hasn't been licensed a lot more often so far is that it was always locked to PC development, which was a very shortsighted thing to do by the guys over at Crytek. The more choice developers have in terms of tools and development, the better. I certainly hope that a lot more developers will give the CryEngine a chance now, it's certainly one of the best 3d engines to work with, IMO.

I don't know, I was bit unimpressed with that video. Maybe the quality wasn't helpin but I was expecting something spectacular. In my opinion Killzon 2 looks better and I don't even have that game (since FPS make me dizzy). I would have to see both engines live ona onole to really tell, but just as an observer Killzone looks better, but then again that is a full game and this is just an engine demo. I was far more impressed with the cryengine 2 vids.

They shouldn't have called it CryEngine 3 (gota love marketing ..). It's just CryEngine 2 ported to consoles. And it def looks kind of ugly in the HD video. It's nowhere near Crysis on a decent current PC (less than 1000$).

Guys, who says that a tech demo of version 3.0 has to be better looking than 2.0? I mean, what they did was laying out the foundation for the future lifecycle of the engine.

What else should they've done? Go back in version numbering, calling the new engine 1.5? You don't number the builds based on how good the tech demos look, it just defines the iteration. It has nothing to do with marketing. At all.

It's just the next stage of where CryEngine is going and it's the best thing they could've done: Multiplatform support and laying out the foundation for next gen game development.

I dont know, didn't look that impressive to me. The tree physics looked pretty sweet though when he was shooting at it.

In one or two years when CryTek gets a complete rewrite for consoles, this development detour wont matter. This is as much a Public Relation ploy as it is a Marketing move. Getting the word out to game developers/publishers that they are very serious about PS3/360 development.

I don't expect that Epic is losing any sleep over this as they are already working on the UT4 (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9053/Unreal-Engine-4-in-the-Works-Epic-Games-Expands/) engine. However, you can be sure they know that in the coming years there will be more competition.

those graphics are sweet, especially the outdoor scenes. i wish the jungle scenes in halo 3 looked like that.

If you didn't impress, watch CryEngine 2 (Crysis) tech videos. They are 3 years old and still impressive, still the best graphics so far.
http://www.gametrailers.com/game/2509.html

They limited the engine to run consoles, that's obvious. Fake reflections, slow updating shadows, narrow view distance etc. The engine is capable much more of what you see on that video.

If you look development side, the beauty of CE is Sandbox Editor. It's amazing, just play with it a few minutes, you'll see. :)
