View Full Version : Modelling: objects crossing

Hi,

I've this problem with modelling. I want to be able to create objects that would be able to bounce off of other objects in the viewport. For example, if I have two boxes and I try to move one over the other (in a sense they would overlap), the box I'm moving would stop at the moment it touches the other box. Now I know this can be done using dynamics in an animation. However, for precision modelling reasons and since I have a complicated object, I would prefer to do it this way.

Does anyone have a solution to this, or any ideas how it might be done?

Thanks,
fusio

Maybe you could look up for the reactor controller to do that, i don't know if it will suit your case but it could help.

Your basically talking about collision detection. Can you be less criptic about what your intended use is? There may be an easier way.

Please give us more info. You will get better answers.

Yes! Collision Detection. Thanks 3DZealot, had problems with the term.

Anyway, to be more precise, I'm modelling grapes. Since it's an organic model and I'm attempting to create one very realistic (shape-wise) and therefore complicated grape, I get easily lost in it all. Since the grapes need to be animated I often find that some grapes intersect. Unfortunately, none of the snap tools seem to help, so I'm looking at collision detection.

Any ideas?

try using "smith cloth"

this plugin can be used for rigid bodys too.. i think it is better than dynamic animation in some aspects

SimCloth is still calculated in a seperate pass, from the sounds of it he wants the collision detection to happen "real time", in the viewport, as he moves the vertices and objects around.

A feature I too would like to see.

I don't belive you can do it in the way you suggest.. still, I suggest checking out the Flex modifier, I don't have MAX in front of me so it's completly untested, but it does have ways of making collision happen, and it does work it's 'magic' real time.. just saying it might be doable to get something working.

Well, it's good to know at least that such feature definitely does not exist.

So, since it doesn't, let's talk technique...

How would you go around modelling these grapes for detailed and close-up animation?

Thanks everyone!

depends. What kind of animation, and how much movement? Can you show an example of what you're already working with.

Taoizm:
I'm considering FK or IK...
There's the main branch which holds the smaller branches which hold the grapes. I intend to move the main branch and cause everything else to follow that movement in a "natural" way. Animation itself would be mostly circular causing the grapes to pull away from the main branch and eventually tear off it.
All effects of gravity. Similar to doing the same thing with a real grape...
So, I guess that means a lot of movement and therefore, nothing can be hidden...

any ideas on how I should approach this?

thanks,
fusio
